Minor hijack here. Pam, would that hold true if the beet pulp were mixed with molasses? We have both kinds available here. Inquiring minds wanna know

Eileen, ALL beet pulp has molasses added, the question is 'how much'. the 'with' has more sprayed on after it is at the final packager, the 'plain' just has what the harvester/drier sprayed on to control dust. either way, they don't and don't have to control how much, so it varies bag to bag. the good news is that you just have to rinse it after soaking and you remove nearly all the molasses... that is if you rinse until the water runs clear....

Thanks, Beth..should have clarified the question. I want to help keep weight on our 27 YO QH gelding, who is still going strong, aside from some arthritis and general old age issues. We've been giving him beet pulp, on doctors orders, for a semi recurrent diarrhea problem. I'm wondering if giving him the beet pulp with molasses would help with some "winter calories" to help him add/maintain his weight (which right now is good, and I'd like to keep it that way), and help keep him insulated during the winter. Good feed program, he's well maintained. He's got blankets galore, all shapes and styles, for every occassion He's wayyyy, wayyy, loved ;D MA, I hope you have good luck w/ Dazzler.. I love his new name, and wish you all the best as you put some weight on him. He sure is lovely Weight takes time, what size blankie does he wear? I might have something here that he can use. PM me, or my email is dadixieyedhusle at optonline dot net

Snow. When the dogs woke me up at 3 to go out, snow on everything. It was 48 degrees when we went to bed at 11. Sigh. Out to check on Dazz. He and Sierra were cuddling in the shed. Sierra's Wrangler duck canvas blanket sorta fits him, he is a big fella. I think it is a 76, and it is about 6" shy of being able to close around his butt, but it does reach around to the sides of his tail. He stood there munching on hay and let us strap him in. I wish he were more interested in his grain mix, he just kind plays in. Sweet stuff doesn't seem to help get it gone any faster. I will try the beet pulp recipe out and see how that goes. Vet was able to move up his appointment, we are going in Monday.

Yes! The vet is coming! Snow already? I will see what sizes of blankies Kate left behind and let you know if I have anything. I am not sure we have real heavy ones but if you let me know what kind of blanket you want for him, I will look around. I don't blanket mine because they are not working and it doesn't get that cold here.

Hi Mustangappy,
I purchased 3 size 80 stable blankets this summer and cannot use all of them (they are not waterproof). I would be happy to give you one, if you think an 80 would work to use for layering, but you would need to top with a waterproof sheet during wet weather. Just let me know your address, and I will put one in a box for you.
Glad to hear that your Appy is doing better. I hope you don't leave RO!
Katie

Oh man... Snow... well, I love the look of it, and love a few minutes of it, then YUK! cold!!! oh I hate cold. Glad the guy likes blankies! I also might have a larger blankie that might fit, we had a few donations this year, let me know if none of the ones offered here pan out to fit, I have to get mine to the washer... so I will be a few days before I can send anyway... Pretty sure I dont have a big waterproof one, Jet uses that one, but might have a spare of the non-waterproof/denim kind with lots of snuggly thermal lining!
Also hopeing you find a way to not leave us here!

Please, I don't even want to think about snow... and early darkness and taking care of horses in the dark, etc., etc. Why do I stay where it snows? Pam

Probably because you can't afford to pull up roots, horses, and other misc. critters to move to where it is warm year around, just like the rest of us!! Dazz thinks it's play day, and won't stay in the shed. I am going to lock his skinny behind up.

They can stay warmer if they move around, so if he is blanketed, let him play! He will be happier and happier horses are less tense and therefore eat more...

It is supposed to warm up to nearly 65 again tomorrow, go figure. I am looking forward to it, I am still making minor repairs to fences and kennels in preparation for winter. Gotta change out those 10 gal. dog tubs for heated water bowls, put floating heaters in the horse tanks, lay in more straw and hay, etc. Ha! Now I bet I got ya all writing YOUR to-do lists...

Dazzler is funny, he does these passive agressive maneuvers because he isn't really up to just running away, it's too much work. If I try to put drops in his eyes, or ointment on one of the scrapes on his face, he lowers his head till I either quit or he touches the ground whichever comes first. The vet is going to have fun trying to examine his teeth, between him lowering his head and clamping his lips, he isn't going to make it easy.

LOL!! I'm glad to see he has his sense of humor intact!!
Their lips are VERY strong when attached to a stubborn horse. I was trying to check the lip of a big (17HH) TB mare (!) today and she was having NO part of it. Never did get a look at the tattoo.
I have a coupon for SSTack ($10 off) and their blankets are the favorite of most everyone on another maillist I'm on. Do you want to use it to get a nice heavy blanket for Dazz? PM me your address and I'll send it up to you.
btw, I found out I gave you the wrong phone number for Sara in WA (equine nutritionist) - do you want the correct one or did you connect with her through the board?

Please do send Sara's number, I have lots of questions. I just recieved notice that PEC sent Dazzy his own new blankie, for which I am very gratefull, and feeling very teary. I have been so overwhelmed by all the support and helpful suggestions for Dazz's care. You all have been just wonderful, and I don't know how I would have made through this week without you. I am going to take new photos later today, as it is much warmer and I can peel off his blanket. It's Idaho, if you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes, it will be something new. I am anxious about the vet visit tomorrow, because it is one of those things where you want to know what is going on, but you are afraid of the results. Skinny I can handle, lame I can handle. Skinny because he has some horrible disease or lame and always going to be in pain, not so easy to handle. The dreads are keeping me awake, though, so at least I will have something to go on tomorrow and a plan of action. My vet has been taking care of equines professionaly for over 30 years. If he has something going on, she will find it.

Tossing his head up and backing up is harder than just dropping his head to the ground. He knows I can't do anything with him from a prone position, LOL! He is a big boy, I think he is even taller than 15.2 hands. Brian is just under 6' and can't see over his withers. Our next door neighbor calls him Goliath.

It will be good to know what is going on with him. I don't know about you, but I don't seem to have the ability to imagine anything turning out well. I always imagine the worst. Rarely has anything ever turned out as bad as I imagined. I will hope for the best for you tomorrow. Pam

Dazz is certainly a noisy fellow. He and Sierra pretty much ignore each other unless she gets out of his sight, and then he has a verbal melt down. Boy has he got a loud, deep voice. She moved to the other end of the pasture out of his line of vision, and you would have thought he was being mauled by cougars or something. What a set of pipes.

Yes, he looks better. My daughter was telling me today a horse under a lot of stress or sick can loose 200 pounds in a few days due to dehydration, she has seen it happen before. Wow.

PEC has kindly donated a brand new blanket for Dazz, for which we are very grateful! Crossing my fingers for the vet appointment. Teeth, sheath, and bloodwork, we might have to reschedule for the x-rays if she runs out of time.

I think he looks a lot better, too! Hope he's a good boy for the vet today so he can get everything taken care of! (I think you need an appointment at a day spa! You've been through your share of stress the last week!)

Oh he is looking better already, so a lot of it must have been dehydration. You can't gain fat that fast... (or lose it!)... it is not unusual to lose up to 10-15% of body weight in water, that is the 'line' where you start showing signs of dehydration btw... so that is 150-200 lb for a big guy like him... just for perspective.
He looks like he is enjoying your nice home too! Congrats on him, and let us know what the vet says!
