I just talked to a lady in Springfield OR. She has a 22 ?? Yr old Quarter horse/ Arabian? cross gelding who is gentle as a lamb. 'Spirit' has hock issues and the owners are not able to keep him. They can not afford to pay board on a horse their daughter can not ride. These people are VERY nice and would like to find a home for this guy, otherwise he is going to have to be shipped to THE WILDLIFE SAFARI to be fed to the lions. He has 1 more month of board, and would even pay another month if they knew he was going to go to a good home. They have advertised all over for several months with no interest. This guy needs a good home to lay his head and have treatment for his hocks. (Arthritis) The injections are pricey, but as far as I could gather, he has not been Xrayed....there may be more there than what we are being told....The owners are novices....I was hoping, AHEM...TIREDDOG might be able to take him on a temp basis? ?? This boy needs his teeth done and is having a hard time keeping weight on due to this. He is on LMF senior and Cool Calories along with Vits. I know a veterinarian who can float teeth for $80.....If we can get him into a home maybe we could all chip in to have this boy examined? I may be able to pull something where I work?!?!?! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

How can they humanely euthanize a horse, then feed it to the lions? The horse has to be free of drugs, right? So how do they kill the horse? Or do they?

I heard they just shoot it after it arrives at the park...hope I'm wrong.

They must shoot them. If it's done properly, it's quite humane.
I guess it beats the feedlot, though. So sad....this horse sounds like he needs some TLC and an educated owner.

I'm sorry...but what is wrong w/ these people...pay for the euthanasia for cryin' out loud if you completely run out of options!!! How do you know that it'll be "done right" at the safari? I'm sorry to rant, but I'm convinced that not everyone out there is 100% human being these days....

I can tell you with 100% certainty that it is NOT always done the humane way @ the Safari. My recent rescue has convinced me that there are some new people and hopefully they are getting better - but I have first hand knowledge of live animals being donated (LIVE - in the lion pen) and glancing shots by young rangers who do NOT know how to handle a gun. 3 shots later and the horse is finally out of his misery. Again - these things happened a while back - I hope they are improving - but I would NEVER EVER EVER give one of my animals to them. I also offer to bury local horses on my place in the alternative. (If someone doesn't have the land and feels they have no other option than the Safari.) How could you walk away and trust that something like that was done right? I'd be left to wonder the rest of my life. And even then - years ago - when I worked there - alot of the carcasses were simply left to rot and not used. No thanks.

I wish I were closer and could help! Poor horse, can't they have the guts to put him down?
At age 22, he is probably going thru hock fusion.....and they come out sound when it's done.

Okay I talked to Krissy today and she said if someone could transport him to PRIDE she will take care of him until she can find a good adoptive home. The offer also stands for the other horse shelbertk2 listed.

Where is Pride? I talked to the owners tonight, she is willing to pay one more month at the stable where he is....the problem is, he is in a tiny stall with NO turnout--which is the worst condition he could be kept in considering his hock problems! He had been turned out when they originally got him and he was sound....They have been letting him get exercise in the arena, and he has been fine so far....hasn't fallen.....

I thought I would 'throw this out there'....there is a vet who moonlights for the clinic I work at, she only charges $100 to float (This includes sedation and farm fee) She has wonderful equipment, and does a fabulous job! She did Misty and is doing Poppy in a couple weeks!! Maybe we could get these guys floated before they move on?! The clinic I work at charges $200-$300 a float....

I am not sure. Shelberttk2 has spoken with them. She gave me the e-mail address and I sent them an e-mail yesterday but have not gotten a response yet. I just read the thread here and asked Krissy if Pride could help out. Maybe Shelbertk2 has their phone number?
