OLSO - 10 y/o - 15.3h - Buckskin Fjord x Gelding
Post by foxie on Apr 26, 2006, 7:30am
OSLO - Approx. 15.3 hh, 10 year old Fjord cross buckskin gelding. He is broke to drive, and was driven through the Tour of Murals Festival in Toppenish. We assessed him when he first came off the trailer at the lot so he was scared. Once he learned that we weren't going to hurt him, he calmed down and listened to what was being asked of him. He automatically lifted his feet and was easily led around. For Adoption Only.
Update: A CBER volunteer who has a soft spot for Fjords bailed him out so he could get some meds and head off anything nasty, as he was coming down w/ the feedlot crud that was going around. He's done w/ his SMZ's, and all better now.
He isn't in danger of shipping now, but needs his own personal supply of cookies and scritches. Moves very nice, too.
$875

Oslo has been Adopted!
I spent a lot of time this weekend with Oslo. I had a comfy bucket in his corral, and had a nice nap in the sun. Oslo was a little spooky at first, but was more curious then anything. After only about 10-15 minutes, I was feeling this "huffing" in my ear, and I probably shouldn't have used a fruity smelling shampoo, must have smelled tasty. No harm though. He was pretty relaxed, though still very alert. We just hung out for a long time. Spent a long time giving him scritches, was standing by him for a long time massaging his neck, and light "t-touch" type massage, he was leaning into it when I hit the right spot.
When I finally had enough sunburn, went to put his halter on. He didn't want to play that game, so FF, who is much more authoritive, gave it a try and had it on in few minutes.
With both of us there, he seemed a little more on alert. I had his leadrope, and FF was moving back from his shoulder, running her hand down his body, and where the cinch would normally be placed. That really freaked him out, and he kicked out at her. She can move pretty fast! After that, he was quivery and afraid, and no point continuing any further at that time. He was very, very scared and reactive. No ear pinning though, just frightened.
Checked him out later that night, he wasn't as relaxed w/ me, but still came around pretty quickly.
This morning, went out to say hi, did a little massage and scritches on his neck, no treats or grain. Jim gave him some scritches and forehead rubs, was fine with that, soft eyes, head down, not aggressive at all. Lots of time spent giving him loves. He startles easily, but not aggression, just self preservation. Sam came in, went to put his halter on in less then a minute, he put his head down for her, she braided his forelock for him. She ran her hands all over his body, a few spots obviously scared him, girth area, and back, but he just quivered, no striking or aggression...just fear. No ear pinning.
He led fine w/ a slack leadrope and rope halter close to a quarter mile to the trailer where he is going home with his NEW DADDY!
Basically, he needs to spend a lot of one on one time to learn to trust. He was better w/ Sam, because he knows and trusts her, as she's been spending time with him the last few weeks. He wants to be good, and wants to trust so badly. He has the BEST possible family in the world to help him through his fear now.

Oslo looks wonderful. My daughter and I have gone out to Hytymes place to pet and brush the horses a couple of times. I had to come look this guy up to see his lot picture. He looks very good, love that mane. If Jim doesn't mind I will take some pictures next time to update some of his horses. He is so busy I don't think he has time for many pictures.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought I would make a thread for Oslo so I can update about his training we are doing.
Oslo is one of Jim's personal horses and I have been working with him while Finn is gone at training. I have been brushing up my skills with him.
He is a CBER rescue that went to Jim's house. (Cybercat is looking for his CBER info to place here on his offical thread, so we will have all the info. here.)
So far with the training I am doing he is doing excellent, he is a little pig-headed when we wants but what horse isn't. We started up using Monty Roberts Join Up methods as Oslo is weary of people and acts a little studdy sometimes. He has a huge haram of mares in the pasture. The first day I tried with him it took me 30 mins + to catch him, then we came and worked in the round pen and I got Join Up & Follow Up from him. Now he really trusts me and will let me do most anything and is respecting my space, it is taking less & less time to catch him every time I go to get him. We are now working on desensitizing he can be a bit spooky although not as bad as he was at first. His first inclination now it to look to me to see what to do. We are using some Sylvia Scott methods for that, he does great with her relaxation techniques. We are hoping to have him going good enough that we can take him to the SAFE Benefit Show and get him out and about to get some experiences under his belt. Maybe some trail rides too. I will keep you guys updated. ;D
He is a great horse, I am happy he landed with Jim.
