What a wonderful day this is to read this! Tell Lisa to hang in there, I too was facing foreclosure and came out the other side. Most banks have too many so anyone trying to pay is worth it to them to work with. Let me know when next round of feed is needed, I can cut loose some funds for this cause. I have a friend whose Appy is 37 and still hanging in there. He is completely blind now and cannot wander around much so Dad is debating what to do as the Appy's girlfriend died about 4 years ago at 33. Sad really when they are at this point because you have to wonder when the time is "right" This old man appy was my teacher for lessons as well as a lot of people I know so when the time comes there will be a lot of broken hearts around.... Maybe we should start a thread - when is the time "right"? The only horse I have had to put down was my old mare that I had for only a couple years and she had just stopped eating, letting me know it was time. Do all horses do that?

Thanks, Tinkerslady.
I will post some updates over the next couple of months. I think Spiker is really set for a solid 12 weeks ---- am guessing he has enough pelleted feed to get him through June.
I am *hoping* that Lisa will be fully employed by then. I did tell her that next round will supply HALF the feed she needs for 3 months, and we'll go from there. Spiker looks better than ever now that he's on pellets. Initially, I thought this would be a short-term thing in order to help her put Spiker down at her leisure, but now I can see that he may be around for a much longer time.....and Lisa may need to prepare for that! She is grateful for any help she gets, a bit embarassed about it....but she is accepting it because she loves Spiker and it's the "right" thing to do.

He really does have a lot of vitality. Thank you for organizing this, Katie. I'm in it for the long haul - I like the idea of a horse community that is willing to help out.

The thing is if most people asked other horse people, most would help out if they can. I would so rather have a horse stay with its owner than be given away to some uncertain fate. We have all hit hard times before. Since he is doing so well, this is the perfect solution for him.

I agree. I think it is ideal that a beloved horse stay with his loving owner. So many folks are dumping their horses that it is inspiring to see someone who so desperately wants to keep hers.

Update on Lisa and Spiker. Lisa is in the interview process for a field technician with the local police department. She is working 6 days/week and starting to make ends meet.
Spiker is doing well. Lisa reports that his vision seems to have gotten worse (he has been partially blind, seems to see shadows and does quite well) or he is getting senile? She says he sometimes doesn't seem to know her. She is watching him carefully.
Thanks again to everyone for donating to this last round of feed. It has made a huge difference for this horse and his person.
