My heart hurts for all of you. Please call if anyone needs a place for their horses or needs a place to stay. We are in south west Washington but you never know . . . . . I have a trailer that will fit 2 horses, 3 if they haul well together. Stay safe

My aunt and uncle, in their 80's, and my cousin and her family are in the mandatory evacuation zone in Rancho Bernardo. It took me 5 hours to get hold of them the other night, as they had already left the area. They are fine and so far their houses are, too, although some of their friends were not so fortunate.

made it through another night, got a bit more sleep last night, however we've been watching more flames on the hills behind the airport. They didn't have power at the airport yesterday, so couldn't load fire retardent (SP?) on the planes, and they had to go north to get that done. Winds are shifting, and I just heard there are new fires flaring up around town. Definitely not out of the woods yet.

Hang in there swiss. I've been up close and personal with fire and it is the most frightening experience. Thanks for keeping us posted. I've been keeping an eye here for your posts, and at Cal Fire. ....worried about the Helen Woodward Animal Center oustide Rancho Santa Fe. They were a mile away from the fire line last night according to Cal Fire. I have lots of friends and a few family affected by this.

Thanks Caly, I think Helen Woodward did evacuate. That's the last thing I heard, I don't think Rancho Santa Fe residents are allowed to go back yet.

LOL, I'm trying to post as much as I can, whenever we have a moment we're trying to take short naps just in case.... We were told last night that they were going to shut off the water up here, so we were running around getting buckets for the horses, and filled them with water, just in case, they said we were going to be without water for 2 days, but so far we still have it. Swissy so good to see you are still OK! I was getting worried last night. I think you should be required to post every hour so we can know you are still safe.

I hate nights...... we've seen smoke all day, but now that the night has come, we can actually see flames again north-east of us. We're watching the Baseball game, kinda of a nice break from the news we've watched the last 3 days. They've become very repetetive and now they're showing families going back to their homes in the expensive parts of town that burned. Yes it's sad, and it sucks that they lost their homes, but we're still on fire up here, it's almost like they don't care. Fortunately the winds have died down. Going Stir crazy and getting frustrated with the media....
I let the big guys in the Arena today so they could stretch their legs, they were pretty happy, and finally started drinking more water. I was concerned they were not drinking much in the last couple of days. Not sure if they were stressed out or why. My friends horses are the same, not drinking much.
Gave everybody some Electrolytes today. Still have water and power. Still lacking sleep and nerves. As long as we can see flames at night we're not having any good nights sleep.

Hey guys, I hope you're alright.... We were in Tahoe when the Angora fire started, at Camp Shelly. The Ranger said we had nothing to worry about, it was "miles" away, however the next day when we left - the fire got within a half mile of our campsite....so please stay safe. It is almost like watching a train wreck.....terrifying and fascinating at the same time. These are only a few of those pictures, I took a ton...and roads were packed and not moving, we would have been stuck had we tried to leave. There was a fire road that went straight into the lake (Tahoe). Had we need to evacuate quickly, we would have headed for the water.....but this sure looked closer than "miles" away. Of course...I gave Scott instructions to get Chris to safety and had already contacted the stables to see if they needed help - they already had the horses corralled and ready to load. Lake Tahoe - June 2007 Angora Fire - 20 minutes after it started, it moved fast. And we were at ground zero the day before with 23 kids, 2 dogs....1 lane road up and back to Angora Lake, sheer cliffs down either side of the road......so glad we weren't there when it started. CDF plane overhead Evening coming on...

Corinne - are you still doing okay???

Post by swissgrl on Oct 25, 2007 9:49:45 GMT -5
We're still doing okay. They're still not letting people back to Ramona, because there is still fire danger, and the water situation is bad. Apparently a lot of people left their sprinklers on when they left, which drained the reservoir, and because of that the fire hydrants don't have pressure.... So it's going to be another day at home. If the air quality wasn't so bad, we could at least be out there claning up the damage the wind has caused....

Stateline Tack is matching funds for donations to horse rescue operations during the SoCal fire: www.statelinetack.com/firedonation.asp?srccode=donateSL"As the windy wildfires continue to rage in drought-stricken Southern California, many animal rescue organizations are in desperate need of help. One organization, Jolene's Horse Rescue, in Palmdale, opened its gates on Monday, bringing in 122 confused adults and four ponies by early Tuesday morning, with additional horses coming in every hour. "This is just overwhelming," said Sandra Venables, the rescue's founder. "We've never had this many...we're cleaning and wrapping wounds...some of them are scarred to death." Besides the 126 horses that have arrived due to the fires, the rescue takes care of 17 horses; as of Tuesday morning, she had already gone through 100 barrels of food. "People are helping," Venables said. "But they have to know, this is a 1,000 pound animal that eats a lot, and we need all the help we can get." Besides feed, she said the other items on top of the list are halters and fly masks, which keep smoke/ash out of the horse's eyes. "We have maybe 20 horses that we were able to supply with fly masks," Venables said. "The fly masks are vital to keep the smoke from their eyes." Jordan Valley, a volunteer of the Los Angeles Fire Department who's assisting the horse rescue, has been busy emailing and calling multiple organizations to assist during this crucial period. "We are in dire need," said Jordan Valley, a volunteer of the Los Angeles Fire Department who's assisting the horse rescue. "We won't turn any horse away; they need our help and we need yours...please, please help." In quick response, Pets United, LLC, owner of Horse.com, Dog.com, and multiple other pet-related URLs, offered many products, including 100 fly masks, and multiple halters, leg wraps and others. "These disastrous fires are causing havoc on 1,000s of animals and have hit me on a personal level," said Alex Tabibi, CEO of Pets United, LLC. "I have a friend who lost 30 horses due to the fires. We want to do all we can to help, and are asking everyone to assist in this cause by donating to any of the multiple animal rescue organizations during this dismal time." Venables also said she doesn't know how long the rescue will be tending to the horses, but said it won't just be a few days. "These poor horses may be here weeks, maybe months, until we everything settles," she said. "We'd hope the owners would come and pick up their horses, but they might not even have a home...it's quite a tragedy for everyone and every horse." Tabibi, a resident of Los Angeles, is calling out to animal lovers around the world to assist the Jolene's Horse Rescue, along with the many other organizations which are assisting Southern California animals. "We here at Pets United have compiled a list of animal rescue organizations to make things easier," he said. "Please, even if it's only a $1, every bit can help assist these organizations help feed and save 1000s of animals." Pets United has supplied the following rescue organizations that need donations: Jolene's Horse Rescue is asking for donations of feed and money to purchase feed. Contact Sandra Venables at (661) 533-5983, or log onto www.jolenehorserescue.com for information. Donations may also be sent to the rescue at 36180 Valley Springs Road, Palmdale, Calif., 93550. The Los Angeles SPCA is asking clinics with spare veterinary beds to assist in boarding evacuated pets and livestock, said President Madeline Bernstein. Those with available beds can e-mail the society at information@spcala.com. New Leash on Life, an animal rescue group, is also seeking help in caring for evacuated pets at its facility in Newhall, said volunteer coordinator Sally Smith. Those interested can call the group at (661) 255-0097, or by logging onto www.nlol.org/donationform.asp and using the online form to make a donation with a credit card."

Apparently a lot of people left their sprinklers on when they left, which drained the reservoir, and because of that the fire hydrants don't have pressure.... Its a hard thing but many people do turn on sprinklers hoping to save their home. It helps against drifting sparks however if the fire comes that close, the heat generated quickly dries any moisture, and the small bit of water coming from that sprinkler would turn to steam. So in the end you help the fire win the overall battle without actually doing much good.

They mentioned on the news this morning that they're developing a gel to spray over your house.....works better than foam, and would cost about $500 for the average home. Some environmental concerns they're trying to fix.......
Sounds like it could be promising if they get it right, and maybe the insurance companies could offer discounts to anyone that stocks it in high risk areas.

They're finally letting people back into Ramona. There was a very frustrated bunch of Ramonans on the news..... So looks like things are getting back to "normal" up here, I think except for east (Julian) and North (Fallbrook are) pretty much everybody is able to get back into their areas. I never thought I'd say that, but I'm actually looking forward to go back to work on Monday.......
