SO Sadie was shipped because she was short QT funds plus $24.00 I can't believe she shipped when her bail was paid. How sad!

Yep.. you will quickly learn in this business he will take whoever is on the lot when the truck comes, that is why we need funds in the night before so we can pull them before he arrives with the death trap.

This is a real tragedy since Chuck's price was paid, but all the additional money wasn't there. God be with you Sadie.

Okay all...just to confirm....here is what happened this morning....
Three horses were tagged...Roz, Sadie and Dixie.
Roz did have a FIRM home offer and her QT/hauling was paid. The adopter did need help with bail as posted.
Sadie did have her bail donated towards her but no qt/hauling and no home offer, not even a solid back up home offer.
Sam called Chuck and was very firm with him, asked him to hold back BOTH paints. He said No, only one or the other. So, after a heavy heart, and a call to Kate, who had donated to Sadie's bail, it was decided mutually to transfer Kate's donation to Roz and Roz was pulled...at pretty much the last minute.
It is very sad......and I am so sorry Sadie. RIP sweet girl.

With all due respect ... money alone cannot save a slaughter-bound horse, in the absence of an approved home offer.
How many times do we have to repeat this?
The sad fact is, this horse did not have a home to go to. A rescue cannot be expected to take in every horse that is bailed, with the hope that it will find a home some day ... we know for a fact that model doesn't work.

Sadie had a lot going for her, but she did not have one major thing, that being a person who was willing to take over financial responsibility for her the moment Sam trailered her off that lot. These horses need both bail met and also a plan, including an adoptor or backup home offer.
It's very sad when they ship even with bail paid... It serves to remind us that all of these pieces must be in place to save a horse. CBER is no different from other rescues --- you must have people willing to accept responsibility for that animal once the rush of the rescue is over.
I saw that Toly was much like Sadie in that he had bail paid but no home, and I saw that he could possibly ship. I stepped forward as "backup home" should no adoptors come through. It's a big deal for me to even make that offer. It means I am responsible for this horse now ---- if he gets sick tonight, I pay the vet bill. If he is not adopted, I pay $500 to ship him to CA. I did not make this offer lightly. Taking on one of these horses is expensive. There is just only so far people can stretch.
I am so sorry, Sadie. You had a sweet face and I wish we could have saved you.
Thanks to Sam and all the CBER volunteers who work so hard. I know we cannot feel the sting of a Sadie quite like you do. And thanks to all of you who care so much and have such big hearts. We have done great things together and will continue to do so. Please grieve Sadie, and then move on. There are more horses to come.

only one other comment to add, and that is a reliable back up home offer...
