Randel - Approx 2 -3 year old, 15h, grey Qh type stud. He does not appear halter broke but was gentle and allowed us to pet him. He is flashy, well put together and sound at the time of assessment. he is a super nice looking boy with a nice eye, well put together and a great project.

I don't know, he looks like he belongs in a movie like "Lord of the Rings". I just love the black mane and tail on the gry body. I always drew my gry horses with black manes and tails when I was little.

I do hope it works out for you swissgirl...I remember urging you to take another guy awhile back....who was it? Having a senior moment- I see his face but not his name...

Anyway, This looks like a trusting and willing boy...he touched me as soon as I saw his picture. I wish I could bring him home too.... he has just the look that I really like.

But I've always wanted a colt on my own to train, I have a wonderful trainer that has worked with Mustangs, I know he'll turn out awesome.
He'll be an awesome looking boy when all the scrapes are healed up, he already is so nice, I just wish I knew what the type part of him is.

you know what's frustrating? Transport costs more than the horse itself, why oh why do I live so far away!!!!

I'm just trying to get him off the lot now, and see if I can get the Coggins done before she leaves. Got an email in to Sam to see if she can help getting him off. I think she's going to the lot today to pick up somebody else as well.

Yeah, didn't want to let this one slip through the rope. I'm really excited, and nervous at the same time. I really don't need 4 horses, but by the time he is in his prime, my arab will be ready to retire, so this works out great.

I think Randel will be a Merlin, Merlin the Magician...

He is still at Angi's, getting a bit of training. Angi took him on a walk, and he was apparently a really nice boy, not bothered by cars, or tractors, just didn't like the pesty barking dogs, hiding behind the bushes to much.

She said he stood tied really nicely. Apparently he does not like beauty treatmens, as he was a bit pissy about it when Angi was brushing his mane and tail.

But all in all he seems to be doing really well.

I have had the pleasure of seeing Merlin in person, he has an old world flair to him... really nice looking young man. I fed him a couple of apple treats on monday while we waited for the rain to stop.

I guess yesterday was bath weather. Merlin got one too, and what a good boy he was.
I saw a big change in him yesterday. When I first got to Angi's he would barely let me touch his head. After we were done with the bath, and just fussing over him (don't think he likes to be made pretty, he kinda had a sulking look on his face.....LOL) he let me brush his forelocks, snuggle with him, give him kisses on his face, and even let me rest my hand by his ear.
I got lucky, no rolling for him, so he stayed clean for the pictures ;D
He is a really interesting color now. He almost looks rose grey, can't really tell all that well in the pictures. I just think he is such a unique horse in every way.

He certainly is a horse of a different color, always changing! He looks wonderful, Swiss! Did you get to spend very much time with him? Has Angi been able to ride him again? Randel - Approx 2 -3 year old, 15h, grey Qh type stud. He does not appear halter broke but was gentle and allowed us to pet him. He is flashy, well put together and sound at the time of assessment. he is a super nice looking boy with a nice eye, well put together and a great project.

Randel in California is enjoying what is left of our sunshine! He is really a very quiet horse to work with, I can tell that Kerrie did alot of loving on him! Thank you! He is really easy to catch and move from pen to pen but still a little nervous of the butt pats that all horses get here!

He's home!!!!!! Merlin and I went to a Groundclinic at Lifesaver in Lancaster this weekend. He did absolutely awesome, such a good boy. He is very smart, and constantly thinking He caught on to everything real fast. I'm looking forward to working with him more at home.
We also picked up McMuffin on the way home, so he has a buddy now. They get along great. Both of them trailered great. I stopped a couple of times to check on them, both were happy munching on hay all the way home.
We got home late, they unloaded in the dark, walked past barking dogs, through the barn with snorting horses, no problem. They were both such great boys. And very excited to get into their paddock with dinner.

He has changed so much since I first met him 6 months ago. He has grown into himself, he is very curious, but yet cautios.
Yesterday, I was working around their paddock, and both Merlin and the little guy kept looking over my shoulder, just checking what I was doing.
Once he was standing all the way at the end of the paddock. I put the manure fork aside, and turned to him, and then asked him to come to me.
It only took him a few moments to think and some re asking from my end, and he walked all the way across to come to me.
Without food. But he got lots of scratches, and praises.

That is awesome swissg! He is such a neat horse. I'm so glad you were able to envision the potential in Merlin and gave him that second chance. He's a very lucky boy to have you!

just a little update on Merlin.
I've been traveling for the most part since he's been home. But ever since I got back, I've been working on picking up his feet, and just slapping on the bottom of his sole.
Yesterday, he actually let me trim both front feet without a halter on, he just stood there, such a great horse. Just rasped a bit off, I don't trust myself doing a whole trim yet. But I was very proud of him for not moving off.
Now the wormer is another story ;D he thought I looked better wearing it, than him eating it. LOL, he kept shaking his head up and down, and doing the goofy lip thing, as if he was laughing at me. Stinker, so that is something we will have to work on.
Don't blame him though, sticky-yucky stuff!

Merlin got worked a little today. He did really well. I went over some of the stuff we learned at the Lifesaver Clinic, and he remembered everything. He is really sensitive, and therefore really light. We also did some of the Parelli Games, he is so funny, very responsive and quick at backing up, but as soon as you praise him, he comes right back to you. wanting scratches, and loveys. He is a thinker, and needs lots of re-assurance that he is a good boy. So, he got lots of scratches, and hugs.
Yesterday, he let me pick up his back left foot after we worked on it a little bit. I was able to hold it for quite some time, and pat the bottom. He never once offered to pull it away, or to kick. I used the carrot stick to touch him all over, and he couldn't have cared less where that stick was. Since the vet is coming out next week, I went between his legs, touched his sheeth, not a worry about that.
We'll keep working on it though, just to make sure.

I just love the last picture! He has such a sweet look.

If you're still having some issues with worming, try taking an old wormer tube, clean it out well, put some applesauce and warm water in it and start offering that to him. Before worming time, I give everyone a few doses of the applesauce for a few days in a row. Then they get the wormer, and I finish with a few days after the wormer with applesauce so they continue to associate the tube with good stuff.

emjay, I was definitely thinking of showing him in halter. Just need to work him a bit more on the ground. I have put the saddle blanket on him, and once it was on, he didn't mind, even when it fell off, he just did a little hop to the side, and that was it.

He really is a sweet horse, and so eager to please!

yesterday was another exciting day for Merlin.
First, the Vet came out, my regular crew needed their shots, and I wanted her to check if Merlin is in fact a Cryptorchid, or if we are lucky. After the first initial "DO NOT TOUCH ME THERE" warning kick, Trevor acted as a buffer, and she scratched Merlin for a bit, which basically makes you his new best friend. She worked her way from the neck back to his under belly, and was able to really check out the area. She didn't feel any nobs, or lumps, the sac is loose. She also checked his teeth, and he does not have any wolf teeth.

Soooo, we're hoping that he flew under the radar, and got the wolf teeth removed, and gelded at the same time. But she still drew some blood to test the testosterone level.

We should know by monday where the levels are. At that time, we'll plan the next step, which I hope we don't have to go for surgery. But we will if we have to.

Merlins Testosterone level came back with 304, sooo, that means he is a cryptorchid.

I'm waiting now to hear back from my vet with quotes for surgery, and when we can schedule it. He will have to spend a few days at the hospital.

I'm hoping that once they turn him over the little guys will show themselves, and they won't have to go for an "Easter Egg Hunt".

The quicker and easier the surgery, the better.
