Hi everyone. Can somebody help 2 Shire geldings are in desperate need of help......... Both have Canker and need a place to go, with experience, where they will receive the treatment they need...... I thought I could take them in, but sadly, I have no experience with Canker, nor do I have the facilities, funds or knowledgeable Vet & farrier needed for treatment. Do you know somebody who could help these 2 big boys ? They are in NC and need a place to go where they can get the treatment they need, otherwise their owners will most-likely put them down........ It's a long story - their owners have been treating them for a long time and for a lot of $$, but obviously the horses' condition is not improving much at all, so they can't afford to keep going......... If you can help, know someone who can, or have some advice, please e-mail me DIRECTLY ! Thanks. Gabi - SD Lazy Horse Rescue www.LazyHorseRescue.orghorses@lazyhorseranch.org

OK, will someone please enlighten me- what is Canker in a horse. I know what a Canker-sore is in humans, but....is it the same??? Then it needs an anti-fungal.

Had a horse with it years ago-my vet wasn't familiar with it(he had been a vet for 30 years at that time-it just isn't that common around here), but my shoer had seen it one other time before and that horse didn't make it-extreanuous extremely vascular tissue in the sole of the foot/frog. I did some research on the internet and printed out everything I found out for my vet and he perscribed the metronidizole (sp?) tablets that were given twice a day and had a formulating pharmacy make an ointment that (is it an ointment if it is in a grease type base not a lotion?) anyway-I got some lamb's wool and duct tape to make a soft bootie and packed the foot with the metronidiazole ointment and it took a couple months and wasn't cheap-but I had no special facilities-just keep it clean. Once it was gone it never came back-hope this helps-good luck Lisa
