Hi everyone There are 3 horses here in the high desert of Southern CA that need homes. The man who owns them has been trying to give them away for months with no luck. He is on disability and can not feed them. They are starving. Here are their pictures taken today: This is Fiesta Rose: She is a 5 year old registerable arab mare This is Devo: Devo is a registered half arab stallion. He is 7 years old. He has a stomach ulcer and an ulcer on his mouth from a reaction to some feed he was given. This is Charlie: He is a 6 year old registered arab stallion. Registered name is Rashads Charo. These horses need help. Tockita, Barpurple, JenM, Cybercat, Nancy and any others who are in southern CA........can you help by finding them permanent homes? I can foster the mare, Fiesta Rose. My friend can foster the stallion Charlie but we need to find a foster home for Devo, the one with the ulcer. Any donations for hay, senior equine, rice bran, beet pulp could go directly to Desert Feed up here in Phelen. The horses are located here in Phelan. They are still at the owner's house but need to be moved out of there ASAP. Can anyone in this area help? Please contact me by email: Stashasmyarab@hughes.net All 3 horses are free to a good, rescue minded home.

Anyway we can send hay funds to him until they find a home?

I could set up an account at the feed store for these horses. Then I could go pick up the feed and bring it to the property, then be there twice a day to feed them. The details for the store are:
Desert Feed Store 10750 Sheep Creek Rd. Phelan, CA 92371 760 868 5052
Any donations would go for the feed. The account would be set up in my name: Marilyn Wiggs. That's about all I can do for now.
The most important thing is that we find permanent, loving, rescue minded homes for them.

Do you have a paypal account?

Yes I do but I don't want to accept any money for these horses. If there is someone else you know who would accept donations for these three, then that person could either use a credit card or send a check to Desert Feed directly. This way, the donators know the money is going to the feed store through someone on this board that they know and trust.

Did anyone try to contact the breeders of these horses in case they might be interested in taking them back. Or is this man the breeder?

I don't know if this man is the breeder. I do know that he has two yearlings also on the property that HE bred. Fiesta Rose is mamma to one of the babies. Those two babies are already spoken for, according to the owner. It's the other 3 that need homes/food. Of course, I told the man that he would have to relinquish ownership when they are picked up and he is willing to give all paperwork associated with each horse to the people picking the horses up. Only then would I feel comfortable about contacting previous owners of Devo, Charlie and Fiesta Rose to see if they would be interested in taking them back. I would think that the owner would have already contacted the previous owners when he started advertising them as being "free to good home". Who knows. I am just concerned about getting them out of there and into a safe environment where they will be fed.

Oh wow.....I'll keep my eyes/ears open for something for Devo. Are the two temp/foster homes still available for the other 2?
They need to be on a strict re-feeding program so they're systems don't stress any more than they already are........geesh.

A thread on the ABR board has been started: forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=25937.1We are coming up with a feeding plan including multiple feedings (up to 4 a day) to allow their systems to get used to having food. Amounts of hay, senior, beet pulp and rice bran would gradually be increased until they start to gain and, when it's safe to do so, to ultimately have them on a twice a day feeding regimen. The problem is myself and the other woman who have agreed to provide a temporary foster home for 2 of the horses, can not continue to take care of these horses indefinitely. I have 5 (one is a clyde who eats for two) that I am feeding/caring for now and the other foster has 12. I don't know how long it will take to find them good permanent homes but this aspect of the situation is crucial to their continued well being. If anyone can provide a permanent home for any one of these 3, that is the ultimate goal.

Kathy sent me an email showing a response from one of the ladies on one of the boards Kathy frequents......who is willing to foster the mare, Fiesta Rose if we can deliver the horse to her. I'm not sure where the woman lives; probably in the Lancaster, Palmdale area. I'll be calling Kathy this morning to discuss Fiesta Rose with her.
I can't take in Devo because he is a stallion and I have two mares on my property. It's very hard to place stallions because they're stallions.

Any chance of getting those 2 stallions gelded if we can get enough donations for it?

Of course we can geld them if we can get enough donations. Another woman here in the high desert who had a stallion uses the same vet that I do. He charged $255 to geld the stallion. I would hope that he would charge the same for each of the two stallions. The problem is, the stallions should have a proper amount of weight on them before attempting to geld them. That will take some time before they would be ready. If they were gelded, the chances of them finding permanent homes is much better.

Marilyn, I'm in Norcal not Socal so I can't really help with a home; however, I will help with a contribution to geld the stallions when the time comes.
There is an arab lover on this board who lives in Socal so I'll contact her in case she hasn't seen this thread.

Oh, sorry Jen....Tash told me you were in southern CA. Ok, you can blame it on Tash. Hahaha.
Donations are coming in. I was able to go to the feed store and buy $149.45 worth of feed and took it to the owner. He was so very happy to see all that food and was so overwhelmed I thought he was going to cry. He didn't but...
Also, while I was reading the thread on the ABR board and looking at the pictures, I realized something. Yesterday when I took those pictures, I thought the horses were eating. They were NOT. The feed buckets were empty. The horses had their heads in the buckets looking for food.
Thanks to the generous donors.........
Today those buckets are finally full. I was able to buy a 5 day supply of Alfalfa, Burmuda hay, beet pulp, senior equine, rice bran and a jar of probios. Since the horses are nowhere near 1000 lbs, the label said to give them one teaspoon per day. So, each horse is getting 3 meals (morning, lunch, evening) and are being introduced to Senior Equine for the first time in their lives. They have never had rice bran either. I'm sure they think they are at a King's banquet tonight.
Donors will continue to contribute toward feed for these 3 horses until they are settled in their permanent homes. Kathy has been instrumental in locating a very good prospect from whom we are awaiting a call back. We shall see.
Thanks so much Kathy for all the help you have given toward ensuring that these horses find a home or homes......your help has been invaluable and we couldn't have done it without you. Of course, it's not a solid deal yet but it's looking very promising and good for the horses. Keep your fingers crossed that this prospect pans out.

No problem Marilyn! There are a lot of great people in our two valleys who are very good at stepping up when needed. THANK YOU for posting here and letting me do the little I did.
I am hoping that other home pans out as well. (mother and daughter looking for a horse that could be ridden in the future).
Feel free to join our little group High Desert Horse Yahoo group.
We are having a BBQ and sleepover at Lifesavers on the 19th. Horses are welcome. I think a night ride is planned, or you can play in the lighted arena if you prefer.
You could bring your Clyde! they have some adorable PMU babies right now too! They could make anyone smile.
Cheryl tells me she is looking foward to meeting you!

You're welcome. You know that saying, "it takes a village....". I'm sure these horses will find a very good home or homes. I did get an email from someone but it was in my "spam" folder. When I tried to forward it to Deborah who is doing the screening and talking to the prospective owners, it would not let me..telling me the email was considered to be spam and was not forwardable. I'm going to have to open up a new email and re-type the content including April's email addy and send it to Deborah that way. Is this the mother/daughter team you are talking about? Thank you for inviting me to join that group. I will do so in a few minutes. I'd love to attend the BBQ and sleepover on the 19th at Lifesavers. I won't bring clutzy, bull in a china shop Buddy though because he is still not trained. Oh, he will let you tack him up, get on him and he'll walk in the arena but the minute you ask him to trot.....he explodes, jumps in the air, kicks his back legs out and lets you go flying out of the saddle and onto the ground far, far below. Hahahaa. So, he's NOT safe to ride yet. His turn to be trained is coming up soon, then watch out world. The big galloot will be huffin and a puffin down the street hell bent for destruction. I can bring my wonderful 23 yr old Quarter horse Dakota. He goes anywhere and has two speeds. Slow and dead. His registered name is Quincy B Quick but that sure was a misnomer. Quick? Not only no but Heeeeeellll no. He's PERFECT for me. Hahahaha. I met Cheryl and her mom. What wonderful ladies they are. I just love her and her mom. Her mom is so knowledgeable about Arabians and horse training. She's a walking, talking encyclopedia and you could spend weeks with her just listening and not even begin to scratch the surface of all that she knows about horses and training and showing and...... Cheryl is going to bring her mom to my house soon so I can show off my little herd. I'm looking forward to it. Cheryl was so kind to donate THREE bags of senior pellets (I guess they are hay replacer pellets) for Charlie, Devo and Fiesta Rose. I'll be bringing them to the owner tomorrow. Yes, the horses finally have real horse food to eat now, thanks to the generosity of quite a number of wonderful people who care about horses.....and would go out of their way to make sure the horses are taken care of whether they own them or not. Now THAT'S rescue.

Marilyn,
You are doing a great job helping these horses. It's a tremendous effort and you are handling it so efficiently. Please let us know when you will be raising funds for gelding.
On another note: I am so IN LOVE with Buddy. What a gorgeous horse he is!!

LOL I got an email from Cheryl saying how much she and her mom LOVED you as well! and asking me to be hush hush about them helping Ohhh Buddy is stunning!! I know he's not very old (for a draftie anyway) and it's probably just a bunch of baby coming out. They do love to bounce! and Drafties can bounce pretty high! I'll tell Chris to look for your membership, and then just give her a call at Lifesavers about the Bar B Que. They have some little bunk houses, or you can bring a tent, or trailer. It should be a lot of fun! and its just for list members so you don't need to worry about party crashers or anything. Husbands are allowed if they want to come, but no children at this event.

Jen emailed me to let me know about these horses. I will make some phone calls and see about helping place these poor horses. I can also donate some $$ to helping getting them gelded. I found some information on the Arabian Data Source on the stallions. Both are registered 1/2 arab. They both are actually 7/8 arab, 1/8 paint. AllBreedPedigree might be able to say what the paint part is: QTR, Saddlebred, etc. Data Source doesn't tell you that. They are young enough that gelding them will probably still make a difference. We gelded our last one at 12yrs, and it didn't do anything, after the vet promised it would. (he bites). Asked the vet for a refund or to put them back on but I think we were out of luck...lol. Anyway, I will see how I can help. Tasha

Thanks Jen. Those poor horses needed Guardian Angels and as luck would have it, they got the exposure they needed, the generous donators put on their wings and...voila....they're finally eating now.
Buddy sure is a love. He is 6 now. He'll be fine once he is trained properly. Even though he does NOT look like a Budweiser Clyde, he's still "da bomb". Wouldn't it be funny if he was used in one of those commercials where he meets up with the real Budweiser Clydes and tries to mingle and hide in the herd but can't because........he's roaned out and sticks out like a sore thumb?
Tock, uh oh......I wasn't supposed to tell about the generous donation, was I? Oops...oh well. She deserves to get credit for her generosity.
Hubby won't attend the BBQ but he will trailer Dakota for me, drop me off then pick me up when it's time to come home. I'm looking forward to it.
As of this morning, Devo has a home with Liz Masters. Deborah posted about it on ABR. So, the only ones we need to worry about are Charlie and Fiesta Rose. Thank you so much Tasha for networking trying to find homes for them.

Nice teamwork and networking to help these sweet horses!
Speaking of the Bud Clydes, they are performing in Napa County (California) for 4th of July, they're always a hoot to go watch, and visit with in their temporary paddocks.
Man oh man, they are HUGE.

Thanks so much for being willing to help with gelding fees. Devo is going to his new home in tact. Liz will be having him gelded once he reaches good weight. As for Charlie, I would imagine he would be gelded before he goes to his new home, unless the prospective new owner agrees to pay for his gelding. We'll just have to wait and see what develops.
I love the Budweiser Clydes. I run to their section the minute I step foot inside Sea World. I also make sure that I go to the tent where they are on display at the LA County Fair in Pomona.
