Last Thursday, I was brought 2 small kittens that had been abandoned along with 10 others on highway 99 (All were sickly, some had been hit on the road--it was a mess!) . The larger of the two was euthanized on Saturday, she had pneumonia so bad and was struggling to breathe. The smallest of the two, being maybe 3 weeks, stole our hearts immediately. We called him 'Smokey', as he had the prettiest gray coat with stripes. My oldest daughter called him 'Dead Eye' because he had contracted the Herpes virus which made his 3rd eyelid stick to his eyeball. I didn't care, Smokey won our hearts and when he was old enough, we would have the procedure done to correct it. I hadn't planned on keeping the little man, I had fully planned on re-homing him.....We fed him every 2 hours, and he was doing great. He loved his new family, and we loved him. My husband who wanted to kill me when I brought him home, fell in love with him too.....Smokey was here to stay!! Smokey would crawl off of me after feeding him, and waddle over to my husband with his fat little belly nearly dragging the ground. He would snuggle in next to my husbands belly and sleep so contentedly. When I had to work, my daughter fed him on the dot, every two hours. We cleaned him with a warm rag after every feeding, and loved on him. Last Thursday evening, I noticed Smokey did not eat as much as normal. I took him to work with me Friday, where we took his temp which was very low. His gums had turned pale and he was lethargic and his breathing was labored. I made a papoose out of towels and filled an IV bag which I stuck in making a warm 'water bed' for him. I carried him around all day, giving him fluids twice and encouraging him to eat. I took him to a small practicing animal vet after I got off of work (My boss used to do small animal years ago). Poor Smokey's heart was racing, and had a 30% chance to live through the night....The Doctor said he didn't know what was wrong with him, but to continue getting fluids and calories into him. I held him the rest of the night, syringing food into him every 2 hours. The next morning, I called another vet that had seen his sister that we had put down the previous Saturday. When she called me back, she told me he head pneumonia (I had baby on antibiotics already) and to get some Dex into him. I flew out of the house and was headed to the clinic to get some, when my youngest daughter called me and told me Smokey had died.....My husband was holding him, he looked up at him with his one beautiful eye, convulsed and died. My daughter was hysterical, as was I.....We buried him in the back yard, all of us mourning such a little body that had more strikes against him at only a few weeks old than he deserved. We loved that little guy so much, and I am beating myself up for not giving him a shot of Dex Friday morning, I didn't even think of it......How can people throw away animals like they are trash? What the heck is wrong with people?! We had little Smokey only 10 days, but he will be in our hearts forever!! Now he is in heaven with his other siblings.............
