we were going over all the possible names for him last night... our ranch name is Rocking Horse Ranch, so we have named all the foals Rocking... so, then using Khrypton or some formation... superman theme came in to lots... and Sunday, and Friday... we thought it'd be cute to call him Clark Kent, as that was Superman when he was in 'plain clothes'... hehe, for a barn name of course, and maybe Rocking Sundays Khryptonite or something like that... what do you think?

I know pnp4kidz and frr2 are extremely busy, so here are a few pics for the mare-stare-challanged. Hope it'll hold you until they can get *their* cameras unloaded! Havin' a little snack Coming over to say (he's not at all shy) Aren't they sweet together? She's such a devoted mother. Follows him EVERYWHERE. (That is Sunday #2 in the background) Checking out the dog on the other side of the fence. The boards you can see behind them, to the right, are a temporary barracade to keep Sunday #1 from having a hissy fit at Sunday # 2 (in the next stall/paddock) for looking at her little boy! They'll come back down once Sunday #1 gets used to Sunday #2) Clark is quite independent (poor mama!). Several times she went into the stall to eat and Clark didn't follow her in. She'd stick her head back out and call to him. "Yeah, whatever..." Then back in she'd go, he'd start to follow then veer off. Way too many interesting things to see and do outside! Finally she got him in. He had a snack and then just keeled over and went to sleep. mta: to ID Sunday #2 in the background of pic 5 - thanks Swissy for pointing that out!

Awe, thanks everyone! OK, I'll post some pics too.... (snicker) I've been busy... but we had SUCH a nice visit with Caly yesterday! she got to see all our furry friends... well at least a lot of them! and yeah, we look pretty hill-billy with the plywood, but those darn mares are so protective of the babies, and I don't want any accidents thru gates... the hill billy ville will come down soon... :-) here is his first try at standing... oh how far he's come!!!

Thanks guys! he sure is cute in person!
Sunday #2 is loving her paddock and stall... she is such a sweet and quiet mare... no complaints about anything... she is tidy and good in her stall, hasn't made any trouble with Sunday #1 (who is VERY protective of her baby...) She has the hill, and I was a bit worried she wasn't strong enough to navigate the hill, but she likes it... as do some of our old mares, I think it helps them to rise from standing when they lay on the hill... I will probably let her out on the driveway during the days if she continues to do well, as we have belly deep grass out there right now, and hey, she could be a great mower I bet! :-)

oh my, what dose of chocolate brownie cuteness. That by far is one of the cutest little guys I've seen lately on these boards. His color is gorgeous, his markings adorable, so glad he was allowed the chance to meet the world. He matches his mama pretty good, like a Bev Doolittle painting.

The vet is coming at 3:00 to recheck his bloodwork, see if he needs to stay on antibiotics any longer. We'd sure like him to LIKE us instead of us giving him shots or taking temp every time we come near!

We'd sure like him to LIKE us instead of us giving him shots or taking temp every time we come near! Is the baby sick? Why is he on anti-biotics? I'll be hoping that his shots and temp taking are over!!! He looks like a spunky little guy, hope he feels better soon

When the vet came to do his IgG test (which was fine...) she noticed he had a patent uracus... where the tube that drains urine from the fetus through the umbilicus doesn't heal properly and he pees through his belly button. An obvious direct open route into baby, and he had a temp and low white cell count. Lucky for us we caught it so early... he's been on antibiotics since Saturday and seems to be doing great. Will get the bloodwork today. His temp was as high as 101.3, and yesterday was 99.6 or somewhere around that.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear he's doing well I've never heard of an IgG test, is that a special blood test for foals? I'm guessing that is where you got his white cell count. Anyway, glad his temp is now normal and I'll be hoping he doesn't need anymore shots for a while :-)

IgG is a test for immunity transfer from the colostrom.
And I just heard from the vet... little guy is absolutely fine! We just finish out one or two more shots (because one ALWAYS finishes antibiotics!)
Now he just gets to run and grow!

the IgG test is to see if he got the passive immunity from the mare's colostrum. If foals don't nurse enough, or get 'good' colostrum, they don't get the immunity needed.... and they have 12 hours to get in enough good colostrum or they are deficient... and if that is the case, they can only do well if they get a transfusion with serum containing high levels of IgG, immunity cells... to fight off infections. The baby won't make his own for a month or so, so this is very important.
His IgG was very high, but with such an old mare, who had been in poor weight, I worried it might not be 'good' colostrum. ... but it was. While the vet was there, she did an exam on him, and his temp was up, and he had a patent urachus... so we treated that with tincture of iodine to kind of cauterize it chemically and make it dry up, and gave antibiotics to clear his mild infection. He is not pleased with twice a day shots (one in the am, two in the pm) but ce la vie. just one more day left. :-)
