My alarm ususally goes off at 5am, but my dogs ususally get me up at 4:30 so they can go outside and potty and that was the case again this morning. So I let the dogs out and snuggle back into bed for 1/2 hr more sleep. Just as Im starting to doze off, I hear Snickers our lab barking furiously outside. So after some cussing and squinting at the clock, Im as blind as a bat without glasses or contacts I stumble outside to see what the commotion is about. There stands Turtle with his front leg hung up in the fence! So holy sh!t I go running into the house to find glasses, and wake up Ken who was still sleeping soundly. I have to say that man can move when there is a panic situation! Back outside Im standing next to Turtle reassuring him and trying to keep him calm while Ken gets wire cutters. So needless to say, Turtle is pretty level headed and just stood there waiting to be set free and he was no worse for wear, no cuts or anything. He kinda looked at me like "well now your up, would you feed me please?" Im sure if the neighbors were up they got quite a sight, me in my knee high mud boots and flannel pj's & crooked glasses. I sure hope the rest of the day goes better

He is fine, but he is not a dog lover thats for sure. He gets a little cranky if they bark so he tries to either kick or strike at them. This morning was just one of those things he got caught in the fence. So now we really need to dog-proof his side of the pasture.

LOL, my horses totally ignore the barking dogs, great training ;D it drives my dogs nuts that there is no reaction to their barking. But I can take any of my guys out, and they do not care if they get barked at. Pretty cool. Fun thing to get more projects piled up, isn't it?

Yep, ad one more thing to the already too long list. All of this barking at the horses started with my husband horse. Its a game to him, he kicks the feed bucket and the dogs run up and bark and he runs away, then when they lay down hes back at it again. Its kinda humorous to watch, but I guess Turtle doesnt have that sense of humor. At least Turtle has the mellow attitude and waits for his momma to come get him out of a jam.

That's the sort of temperament you want them to have!! A L-o-n-g time ago when I was a teenager, I had a TB mare for Pony Club. We lived in the 'burbs- she had a drypaddock, but each morning my Mom would take her down the street and tie her in a grassy patch and she would graze for a couple hours. One day my Mom went back to get her, and she was head-up, not head-down..........hhmmmmm? when Mom got closer, there was a toddler sitting square between her back feet??? She was sensible enough to just stand there, and wait to be 'relieved' of baby-sitting duty!!

I'm glad that Turtle didn't end up with an injury...One of my minis knocked over a pallet that I pulled out of the hay shed and got her foot caught in between the slats. I had to take my hoof nippers and crunch chunks of wood out of the pallet to get her out....
There was also a report on our local news about a cell phone call to 911 without a voice talking to the operator...they managed to figure out where the call came from and found a woman badly trampled by a horse. Apparently the horse had its hoof stuck in the fence and kicked the woman as she was helping the panicked animal escape. She was in serious condition...haven't heard anything else.

I'm sorry your day off to such an adrenaline rich start, but congratulations on having such a level headed pony! He's obviously worth his weight in gold!

I just wish he were as level headed when it came to other horses. Went riding on Sunday and we were trying to go around a truck and a mule. Well the mule started acting up and it freaked Turtle out, he reared up with me a couple of times but once I "let go"of his mouth he settled down and we rode out a little way from there and stopped and did circles. He seemed to calm down after that. I want the ho-hum attitude when other horses are around too.
