Since we have made the hard decision to place Sampson and Turtle for sale I was wondering if there was a list of good screening questions for the potential new owners. We have already decided that we are going to insist on seeing the place where the horses will be going and calling the new owners vet for references. I figure if the potential new owners are offended by those requests then they can walk away and my horses stay with me. Other than asking how long they have had horses and their level of riding I need to know some good questions that will help screen out the knuckle heads from the good people. We got a call from a person last night that wants to see both horses. She didnt start off on a good foot by saying that at 20 yrs old Sampson was broke down and old.............NOTE to all future owners DONT insult my horses, thats strike #1 and more comments like that one will only get my foot placed squarely in your buttocks and you will be leaving in a hurry. In any case, I have not been in this situation of selling horses in over 25yrs so I need all the good questions that you guys can come up with.

I would ask who is your support person or team , if you have a horse problem who do you call? I have a list of great friends that I can ask to come if I need them, not just a vet. One of my friends maps out how much it will cost per month for a horse. I think that can help with the ones that think I thought they only ate grass . Also call there vet and farr to check if there up to date on care and bills. what are you planning on doing with a horse...4h ,showing or trail.

I might also ask-"if you get injured or lose your job-what back up plan do you have in place?" And definately a buy back clause so if they need to be rehomed-you can make the decisions as to where.
