Wonderful 8 yr old Gelding Free to good home, Blackie , Gelding, Black, Age: 8, 16H, 1000 lbs, Foaled: 2001, Blackie is looking for a playmate. He's a level headed, 16h TB, 8 yrs, english or western, arena or trails. He's fun, energetic but sweet too. He has a pure heart and been through a lot in his life so he needs a softie! Ideally he needs an intermediate rider although no pro needed. He is not able to jump due to a broken leg on the track when he was a baby although he's been sound and walk, trot, canter and trails for an hour or so are fine- in fact he loves it! Vet check welcome, nothing to hide. Owned by a beginner/interm. riding instructor (me)& purely financially driven, lost my day job and have to do the right, but hard thing. I'm looking into the Arab. He has a locking stifle, so I have to look this one up.
Any ever had a horse with this problem?

From her 'Picasa' link, she says, if he's in pasture all the time, OR worked often, it doesn't happen. But surgery CAN be done.

Locking patella or upward fixation of the patella, if intermittent or not severe is not a big deal. The horse is not in pain, and now they do not advocate the surgery that was done in the "old days" unless it is extremely severe. Generally vets and research usually advocate consistent riding/conditioning to improve the muscles around the kneecap and both trotting work and backing work and using hills to build up exercise to improve the tendency for the patellar ligament to slip. Have done extensive look into this as had a horse that had a mild case of this. Many younger horses with straighter stifles can experience this and will often grow out of it with age and exercise.

Thanks for the info. I still need to talk to our trainer/lesson lady. My daughter does dressage but it's just the low level because she is only 10. My bigger concern is that I think he may be too much horse for her. We will see.

I am considering him for just the opposite......an Endurance prospect............just 25ers- not 100's- I'm too old for that! Just don't know if my B.M. would put him in the pasture.....60 acres of hills- REAL hills. I think I REALLY hope that some-else will grab him before I can get organised!!

She said that she has had a large response and that she was following up with all the phone calls. She will not be showing him to anyone until she finds someone that meet's all her requirments. Nice lady and knows what kind of person her horse needs.
