Are Feedlots and auction yards required to scan all horses for ID chips? I've 'chipped' my 2 but it won't do much good if they can still be sold at auction, if stolen.

Nope. I have never seen an auction or feedlot that scans, let alone is required to do so. Microchipping is really good for confirming identity, but a brand is what the auctions check.

So if yours is a breed that doesn't brand- or if you have a 'grade' horse.....you're out of luck?

Even with a brand there's no guarantee. Gypsy had a BLM brand and was NOT titled, so it would have been illegal to slaughter her. We did the brand cert. because I was bringing her to Cali. I don't know if she would have been spared, had I not adopted her. Chuck did NOT have the proper paperwork to ship her, that I know for certain!

no - horse are not scanned - the other issue is that, like dogs/cats - there are several types of chips. Not every vet even has all the right scanners. ALL of my horses are chipped, but all also carry a tiny tattoo inide their ears for my two big kids and under the mane on my old man(that is where they did it at the tme I had him done years ago!) If you are ever concerned - I suggest having your horses freeze branded with a brand specific to you. It will cost you to register the brand and have it designed, but all future horses can be branded with it Sara

Good suggestion. Now a question... I recently acquired a new horse (who will get an intro on this board when I decide on a name). I had intended to get a freeze brand designed for my horses... but now I have two questions with it. Archer already has a freeze brand... can I put another on him? Also, the new horse is a flea-bite gray... do freeze brands show up on them?

do freeze brands show up on them? I think Raz's Trakehner brand is a hot brand. He is grey/white and his skin is black. You can see the brand when he is shedded out but you really can't tell he has one in the winter unless you know where to look. Here is some info on netposse. I think they recommend holding the freeze brand on the grey horses longer so the brand area is bald. netposse.com/prevrec/freezebrand_examples.htm

Tash - if you design and register your own brand - it is my understanding that what you need to do at THAT point is either put another brand on archer or register HIM and HIS BRAND directly back to your brand and you. I can't remember what exactly the process is for that unfortunately. As far as tatoo's on white and gray horses- i have seen some people freezebrand the area bald THE actually tattoo in the area after it heals. have seen this method done a couple of times. guess it would depend on how big the area is going to be that is branded.
