Poor Bob Marley... he is out of retirement AGAIN... this time back to his YOUTH, taking LESSONS! argh, and it's SO hard! no one beating you, no one making you DO it... they are just ASKING!!! and trying to get him to 'give' and pay ATTENTION! oh, this is SO HARD! today's lesson... it doesn't pay to ignore the trainer, even for a second at the gate! and even MOM wants you to look where you are told, and put your feet to follow that 'look'... but you get lots of scritchies... just for 'looking'... ;D next week, back to a riding lesson! to see if what we 'got' today on the ground will translate onto the riding! might even get to LOPE, instead of an hour of TROTTING! argh... but this is such a cool training thing.. it's the Harry Whitney style... he's an old horse.. but Harry is an old guy, so I figure Bob can get this... :-)

Beth......you sure Bob doesn't want to go back to the trails in the woods? If I remember right...he liked it out there. He's such a nice horse. :-)

I know he'd want to just trail ride! but oh well... he's gonna survive the lessons thing... hehe... and he is one 'hunk' huh? specially for an old man! (you know, he's in his 20's! and lives just out on dry pasture eating grass hay!)
oh, and forgot to add.. all of this is cause I heard about this training method, or whatever... and it fit for him! he is a hoot, won't turn to the side to lunge at all! and when you ride he is a lookie loo all the time! that makes him kinda 'herky jerky' when you ride, as he is just really not paying much attention to YOU, but mostly on everything going on around him! ALL I am asking of him in that one picture is to 'look' away from me! LOL! do you KNOW how hard that was for him??? oh dear... and the one before it, I actually was able to get him to LOOK away from me, AND move his feet, while keeping an ear on me... but not spinning around and facing me! that is SO hard for him! he wants to face me or when I'm on him he resists looking the way I am 'asking' him... and it feels SO good when he does look that way, he goes all smooth and loosens up, and softens his back... when he is looking away he is tight, his head is up... all I am asking is for his look, and to be soft... who knows! maybe it will work! LOL!

He's an easy keeper for sure!
I've got a 2 yr. old puppy (she will never be a fully grown up dog) who doesn't respond like any other dog I've ever owned/trained. I've decided that I had to forego all expectations and adjust to her mental processes. She's so honest in everything she does. . .how could I overly correct that?
Bob Marley looks like a "good ol' guy" and sometimes you just can't teach a new dog new tricks.
Millie puppy looks at everything on our walks. . .and, I mean e-v-e-r-y t-h-i-n-g. And, sometimes she just stops while she gets a better visual on what attracts her attention. We've been to doggy classes and she's well trained. . .but, she just needs to look at everything. She seems to process things differently.
I like it when they notice everything around them. I used to ride my old Colonel horse in the mountains and he looked at everything. He usually saw things before I saw them and I always watched his ears for clues. I would much prefer that they see everything out there. . .and. . .be enthusiastic and interested in all of it.
Give Bob Marley a big hug from me! He's doing the best he knows how to do. Please keep us updated as to how the training goes and how he adjusts.

Thanks! will do! I'm not really trying to convince him to 'ignore' things, but to give in to working WITH me, not just do things by rote because someone has forced him into it before... I don't think he ever thinks he is doing things right... so this should give him the impression he IS finally doing it right and it'll all be good.
This is more of a mental exercise for us, I am certainly not going to go work him daily to force him to do this... lol! I'll give him big hugs... he is a great old guy...

He is such a beautiful guy! Have fun in your training lessons, I wish I could convince Turtle to "see" things but not think they were necessarily going to eat him alive. He is coming along slowly but surely. I had to laugh about the dog though, I have a 3 yr old chocolate lab that has defintely got some wires crossed somewhere. I cant convince that dog that I am not "Daddy" to save my life.
