Yup, Heidi loves to save the old timers. We're each different in that respect as it truly depends on which horses tug at your heart. Although I've brought a number of the old ones home and am so glad I did, it kills me to see a young one with tons of potential and its entire life ahead die so early. As sacreddog said, unfortunately, we can't save them all.

I am a small rescue and here is my 2 cents worth, after evaluating the horse, its pro's (training) and cons(health issues/vices) you should evaluate your own rescue/resources. I operate almost solely on my own, we are new and small and receive little to no donation $$$. I assume 2 things. The horse will be here for recovery, mentally and physically, so expect to feed and vet him. and if after we vet him we find issues I ask myself can I afford another lifer? If the answer is, yes I can financially and physically bring the horse into our rescue AND improve their quality of life then I do so, if not then I don't bring them home.
