I noticed this morning that our gelding had a bad smell in his mouth. I cleaned his mouth with some water and noticed that he has scabbed sores on his upper lip on the inside. I have a call into the vet but just thought I would see if anyone has ever seen this. Thanks

well..... I just got some hay from a 'friend', at a nice price... and it was FULL of foxtails! the horses had raw spots in their mouths like that in just two feeds... so, don't rule that out!

Checked our new hay and no foxtails. I guess I will see what the vet says but one of the other horse now has the same thing so 2 out of three have these sores so might be something in the hay.

What about cheatgrass (sp) my horse got some in his mouth and the vet had to drain them, nasty and smelly, my dog had it in his ear and it worked through his eye he had to have surgery, not good we have allot of it here it's hard to stay away from it..Hope everything is good..

I didn't see the foxtails, but found the things in their mouths! I cleaned out the wad of seeds/hay stuck in their mouths and in two days they were all better again, healing well. they might have been some other seed, but they definately had the barbs and were very bristley... and obviously the horses couldn't spit them out... and they were rough on the gums... might use a syringe and flush out the mouth and poke a finger in the upper and lower gums to clean it out and see if there is anything in there...

Well back from the vet and we think (not 100%) it is something in the hay. We found small fiber like things in the sores. Summer sores don't usually show up inside the mouth like his are. So he is on SMZ, a betadine wash and go back to our old hay and see if they clear up. It still could be th summer sores so he got some steriod shots in the large sores and we need to do a good worming. Hopefully something will work and his poor mouth will clear up.

It is the seedheads that is causing all the sores. I was able to really scrub out some of the sores and found the little seeds stuck in there.

OMG, makes me want to go back and clean them out again! this was a week ago, and I figured they were all ok by now, but maybe some still have little seeds in there... argh... my weekend just got more fun...
