So, the gal at the local rescue I contacted about the wandering mare and mustang mentioned a new rescue she is trying to make happen. She doesn't have room to take the horses in.
I'm looking around for local options (temporary and permanent). I have no facilities or trailer for unhandled horses. I've asked about deadlines and to see if she has any pictures, breed info (other than "inbred" ), etc. I'll update when I get more info. Here's what she sent:
Here is the situation. There are horses in Southern Humboldt that have been "wandering" around the hills. Three are studs (6,4,2) there is a Palomino Mare with a newborn filly (born Sunday) at her side, a young filly, and 4 others that the owner wants to keep. The "keepers" are older and she feels "attached" them.
The studs have never been handled - one was shot earlier this month....he was aggressive. The horses are on over 200 acres with fences. And, the area is too remote for a truck and trailer this time of year.
The owner is willing to "surrender" the horses - but, we do not have the room (or the resources). If she does not find a place for the horses to go - "I have no choice except to sell them to the butchers".
If you have any ideas, let me know. We cannot post her name or contact info - she will not allow that. And, she lives in an area of the County that is not "safe" to wander into.
It looks like there are 10 horses that should go, but of that 6 are the "emergency" ones and all sound unhandled:
6 yo stud
4 yo stud
2 yo colt
1-2 yo filly
palomino mare and newborn foal
To me, it seems like if they just gelded the boys, they would be perfectly fine living out their lives on 200 acres, but I don't know the other issues. Anyone in northern CA, southern OR looking for a herd of horses?
