My sister lives in Redding and just moved her 2 horses to her property after having them at a boarding stable for the past year. She plans on taking her horse to her dressage trainer's place a few times a week and her husband takes the other horse on trail rides a couple times a month. Unfortunately, both horses get VERY upset if left alone. She is realizing it would be nice to have a buddy for them. Does anyone in northern California have an older, mellow pasture ornament that needs a retirement home? Somebody who loves to be groomed, is fine on pasture and could handle the occasional bareback mosey around the property with my 98 lb sister aboard would be ideal. The horse may need to be occassionally be left alone, but neighborhood horses are within sight. (Her horses are terrified of the herd of minis across the street!) She has 10 acres that she just re-fenced with no-climb and electric and is in the process of building an arena. Beautiful place - fully irrigated, new barn, pond, etc. She provides great care for all her critters, loves scooping poop, and has medical and vet experience. Her horses get regular vet, chiropractic and farrier care (she can also do her own barefoot trims). Her horses are sleek and healthy and would do anything for them. Her biggest concern for getting a 3rd horse is that she won't be able to give him/her the time he/she deserves. I think her current two would be glad of the break (she's a bit anal retentive : ! Any suggestions?

is it flat land or hills? wonder if Taffy might work... she is semi retired, calm as all get out and likes other horses... loves pasture, but needs a bucket of pellets at night now, I'd guess she's lost some chewing ability... I give her gelatin for her knee, which is a big bump, but cold and well healed. no special care otherwise and she LOVES to go riding... and can carry anyone... anywhere. she can do some hills, but she'd be happiest on flatter type land.
the caveat here is that I did take her to trial at a theraputic riding place, and she hated it! she misbehaved, got 'girthy', cranky, wouldn't tie (paced) and was all around miserable... so she came home and has been smiling since.... sigh so, if she wasn't happy, she'd have to come back 'home'... and we MUST be allowed to visit... :-)
she trailers in anything, will pony or be ponied... and isn't skeered of nuthin... cept mountian lions... so her previous owner said. :-) barefoot and great feet....
mta: she is big... prolly 16.3 h, and 2000 lb, but she is easy to ride, my very very timid daughter rode her the last two years in gymkhana... and... she could care less if you just leave her out in pasture... and don't 'bother her' with stuff like blankets and stuff... hehe... (tho she has one... in case it gets chilly... and loves to be brushed... ) and her knee is stiff to bend, so you have to be very careful lifting it for picking and farrier... keep it very low... for all day riding at shows we buted her last year... worked very well.

Great, Beth! I almost emailed you direct as you are pretty close and known to have extra horses on laying about . Her property is a bit rolly - I'll try to get some pics so you can get an idea. Her horses are pretty big (both 16+), so size isn't an issue (more to brush). I'll gather some pics of Taffy and send them on to Karen. She'll need some time to settle in with her horses at home - maybe we can roadtrip down and do some window shopping? I'll also let my trainer know about Taffy - she's specifically looking for an older draft mare for lessons (bareback, ground handling, nothing hard).

Awesome Becky! she can do rolling... I live on STEEP... and she wants to be out soooo badly... but it is hard to climb to the top for hay... and, she needs some pellets... so we have her in a paddock, and she is sad. She wants to be with the 'herd'... but... wants to be fed too :-) it's a quandry.
I think she mostly wants to be retired now... but is ok with a ride here and there... this sounds perfect so far... and, if she isn't perfect... perhaps we have another!!! :-)

Becky, I have CBER Rosalinda available for adoption. She is a 13 year old 15.1 TB mare, sweet and well behaved. I am getting rather desperate to place her. I have had her for 2 years and people seem scared off by her hoof scar (barbed wire injury). I have xrays of this foot that show she has a fused coffin joint. She is pasture sound and VERY sweet and loving. She loves kids. She stunningly beautiful and fun to look at. "Sunny" is UTD on everything. I am offering to continue paying the cost of her yearly dental, up to $250, for her lifetime in order to make her more attractive to potential adoptors. She is barefoot. She's in Santa Rosa and makes a great companion for both mares and geldings. She's an EASY keeper, but needs shelter and/or a rug in winter. I would provide transport to an approved home. I allow a trial period and a "return" policy at any time on my fosters. On the feedlot, 2006: In California with us:

Champ, Champ, Champ!! I'll even bring him to you! ;D
He would do great out on pasture, has no special needs, but would do best with front shoes and a winter blanket, which I can provide.
Of course, he's always welcome back here if he doesnt work out.

Wow! What amazing horses! I'll put together some pictures and descriptions for her of these guys. She's pretty stressed out right now because she just moved her horses and is still trying to figure out a new routine. Adding a kind, mellow, older horse to their herd will benefit them all.

Naw, she's been crazy busy for the spring/summer (settling the horses into the new property, building arena, getting cows, vacation, etc.). I've actually only talked to her a couple times in the last 2 months. She's one of those whack jobs that has to have everything planned out before she does it so it's done right . Where as we normal horse people act a bit more impulsively . I'll check in with her and see where she's at.

Does she like spots? Apache is a very well behaved QH appaloosa who would love to have lots of attention. He has lameness in his hind quarter. Nothing they can pin point. He might be useable for walking grandkids around the pasture, other wise he makes a beautiful pasture ornament and buddy horse.

wish I was more like HER!! LOL!!! Hah! If I didn't know it would be the last straw for hubby, I would be stealing Sundance from you and Cayenne from Watermark! I'm so in love with both! (Does Sundance come with the harness? No! Stop!) Spots? I know I do! We had appies when we were kids so have a big, squishy soft spot for 'em.

Don't tempt me Beth! I've been having fantasies of training Manny to be a cart horse. I got the surcingle and long lines and just ordered the Rashid ground driving 101 dvd.
