Lending a helping hand
This Southern States program enables horse-feed customers to support charitable causes.
Margaret Hadley has experienced many difficult challenges since 1997, when she established a horse therapy program to help critically ill children.

None were more challenging, she says, than in the early going when she struggled to secure enough funding to get her charity started.
"We would not have made it without the support of Southern States," she relates. "Their donations and support were critical."
Hadley's organization, Life Horse at Covenant Farms near Tannytown, Md., participates in the Co-op's S.H.O.W. (Special Horse Organization Winners) Program, which enables customers of Southern States and Triple Crown horse feeds to help their favorite charities by saving proof-of-purchase coupons from feedbags or bulk delivery tickets.
"Customers clip the proofs and sends them to qualifying charitable organizations enrolled in our program," explains Karen Engel, farm, home and feed sales representative for the co-op.
The co-op donates 25 cents per bag proof from Triple Crown and Legends and 10 cents for Reliance. And it donates $10 per ton (or $4 per ton on Reliance) for bulk tags to the organization.
"During the life of this program, we've donated to a variety of charitable groups," notes Dr. Martin Adams, nutritionist and manager of horse-feed sales for the co-op.
For Life Horse, customers help add about $500 per month to the charity's operational funds.

Life Horse helps challenged kids do something one might think is impossible--ride horses.
Southern States is the exclusive supplier for all horse feeds used in the program. "We would use these feeds, even if this donation program didn't exist," Hadley says. "They're the best horse feeds on the market.
"Riding is very therapeutic for the children," she adds. "It helps with their balance, body strength, coordination and cognitive skills. And it helps them build confidence."
One of the group's many events is a play day, where volunteers host groups of children from city hospitals in the region.
"We have our regulars, too," Hadley notes. "It's gratifying to see the progress these kids make while they are with us. We've witnessed many blessings and miracles." Those blessings, she adds, include participation in the S.H.O.W. program.
For Hadley, the organization and hours she donates are truly a labor of love. "There are so many children in need, and funding is always a challenge," she notes.

Clipping This "Coupon" Really Pays
On every bag of Triple Crown, Legends and Reliance horse feeds is a proof-of-purchase coupon.
Just by taking a minute to clip this coupon from each bag of horse feed you use, you can make a difference in any one of dozens of charitable programs participating in the S.H.O.W. Program from Southern States.
"In any charitable organization, the need is always greater than the available resources," notes Southern States' Karen Engel. "That's why we encourage our customers to take advantage of this program. It doesn't cost them anything, except perhaps the price of a postage stamp to mail the proof-of-purchase labels to a participating organization. It's a win-win situation; you get quality horse feeds while benefiting a charitable group."
Engel and Margaret Hadley, of Life Horse, stress that it's important that customers submit proof-of-purchase labels--not UPC (universal product code) bar codes containing production identification and pricing information for store-register scanners.
"The proof-of-purchase label is located in the lower left corner on the back of a feed bag," Engel notes.
