How Cool - gives new meaning to "just let him go". Altho - that could have been disasterous had that horse made a sudden turn!

Anyone who thinks TB's don't like to race should watch this. I do think the racing industry as a whole is hard on horses, but most of the horses do love to run.
I didn't know that until I read Seabiscuit. It made me start asking around and heard over and over that his competative attitude was not unusual. Gave me a whole new way of looking at it. (full disclosure- I've never actually seen a horse race. A fact I intend to rectify when GGF opens again and Spicy is ponying for races.

Hmmm...I see it as the herd mentality. Horses like to run around together, just watch a herd in a pasture on a windy day...

It would be herd mentality if all that horse did was run with the group. He didn't. He paced himself in the begining and made an aggressive move on the final turn and made a concerted effort to win that race...if you have ever either spent time watching the races or actually ran track and field in school...the timing of his actions would make perfect sence. If he was just running with the herd he would be happy without an actual race & win from behind...just would have gone along for the run. Actually I have found a couple of more similar vid's and one from a steeple chase where the horse did just sort of follow along. This guy actions were more than just "herd" mentality. We have 10 OTTB's in our barn and the difference between how they work compared to our Quarter Horses, and other breeds is rather eye opening.

My grandparents lived in Arcadia, about a mile away from Santa Anita. I remember my grandfather telling me stories about Seabiscuit...how that horse LOVED to run. He used to take my mom and aunt to "family days" at Santa Anita. Then he told us (the grandkids) all his memories of Seabiscuit. I wish I could have seen him run!!!
I LOVED the video of Gander!

Not only did Seabiscuit love to race, but he liked to "toy" with his competition. The book captured it and expressed it very well. I didn't see the movie, so not sure if they brought that out or not. That whole bit facinated me. First time it occured to me that many of these horses race, not just run cause some guy is on their back telling them to.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you put 10 racehorses in the starting gates sans jocks and just let them go.

I was thinking the same thing...a few experienced race horses...who know the game...bet that would be a HELL of a show. As for the betting part..would take out some of the "human" influences!

That was the most amazing video yet! That horse had a game plan and knew exactly what he was doing. . .and. . .he did not need a jockey to tell him how to run that race!!! With that kind of a horse, the jockey would be superfulous. At any time, that horse could have veered off, chosen to stop, chosen to come in 2nd. But, no, he wanted to be out front. Amazing. Amazing. That race will go down in the history books. Too bad they have to have a rider on their backs at the finish line.

One factor is weight... believe me after 6 years of suffering weight pulling, (hot box laxitives etc.) I reduced beyond extremes!!! They do respond to different amounts to carry. Just think of packing a big kid piggy back or a little one!!! BUT, by all due respect it is 80% horse!!! Some are PURE race-horse, and they let the whole field know it! I have a champ in my barn right now... coming off a lay-up, he is THE king! He adores his job, in fact he tries to train me! Spicy even tries to copy him, how hysterical!!! He will be ready in about 3 weeks ....I am already nervous, he gives me goose -bumps when he runs!!! If any are interested please come down and meet him,and of course Spicy! By the way I was a jockey for 6 years... 15 broken bones and 8 concussions later....

Speaking of Seabiscuit...I taped the Sunshine Millions races from awhile ago and there was this one part in it where the people were interviewing a guy who polished shoes at the Santa Anita track for a very long time (he was 96 and still shinning shoes!) and when they asked the man if he's seen Seabiscuit he looks at them and goes, "THe movie? I saw the horse!" ....it made me laugh.
