Does anyone have any treatment ideas for a sarcoid about the size of a baseball in a horse's "arm pit" on a rear leg? She is very sensitive on it and threatens to kick if I touch it. Also, it looks like it has a couple of small cracks that occasionally bleed on it.
I will try to get pictures tomorrow...
(BTW, I have already sent an email to my vet about this and have scheduled for her to come out, but wasn't able to get an appointment until early May. I am hoping to get started on something a little earlier then that...)

Here is a lilnk to some information on sarcoids. I hope this helps out a little. They sound like they are hard to treat. Let us know what happens. Please post a picture too. I think my Arab mare may have a small one under her jaw. Is this on the little Arab mare you recently got? pcwww.liv.ac.uk/sarcoid/facts.htm

Yes, it is... I have dealt with little sarcoids before and they were no problem. However the size and the position of this one kinda confuses me on how to treat it.

BTW, in case it helps with your horse... the way that I have treated small sarcoids in the past is to apply a blood root paste each day for a week, and then swat for a week, then blood root paste for a week, then swat for a week... At that point they have always been gone.

Did you get a chance to have the vet look at it yet? Do you think it could be an abcess from a punture wound or are you pretty sure it is a sarcoid tumor? Keep us informed, this kind of stuff I find very interesting.

Vet hasn't seen it yet... she is scheduled though...
I hadn't thought of an abcess, do you think that it looks like one? She has multiple sarcoids on her (not NEARLY this bad), so I had just thought that this was another one that was worse then the others.

Doesn't look to be a sarcoid. I would have a biopsy done. Crappy place for it too poor baby. I am glad you are there to help her !

When the other vet came out to do her first exam he saw it and said that it was a sarcoid... but he just saw it from the side and as you can see it looks much different from the side as from the bottom. The top picture is all he saw, and when he tried to touch it, she threatened to kick him... so he certainly didn't get a very good look.

I'd sedate her down and get a good look at it!

I would use Xterra, my friends horse had a big nasty sarcoid on her chest last summer (That was horrible because of the flies) Anyway, the Xterra did the trick! It's expensive, but worth it!

I have to agree with Dean though, this one is a bit odd looking...I would definitely do a biopsy....Better safe than sorry!

Some sort of funky skin fungus probably, try the "Shapely's MTG" or "Eqyss" products....They work wonders! You haven't seen any critters have you? ?

She had lots of bot eggs all over her, but that is all. The vet checked for bugs and he didn't see any either...
I've gotten all the bot eggs off except for the ones right around that nasty sarcoid...

That's how Gambler sheds. Just pull out handfulls and then he's bald in that area. Could be "critters", but could just be regular shedding too. I do know that I've had horses lose their hair after stress too.
I'm curious about that sarcoid. I like the biopsy idea. Let us know.
MTA: How old is she?

Vet said she is between 11 and 15 years... The vet won't be out until the 5th, but I am going to ask about a biopsy.

Never hurts to give a dust for lice. Just incase... I have very patchy semi-naked horses too. With this weather cold=hot=cold=hot their poor little bodies are confused.
Had an old Appy when the kids were very little. She had massive amounts of hair in the winter. My daughter decided to body clip her and put a blanket on her.
This poor mare I guess was used to loosing her hair a little at a time. When she was done being clipped she looked down and caught a good look of a very large pile of hair! Now mind you, it was her own but none the less it had beady little eyes and large horse eating teeth. This horse was not a jumper until that day and I never saw her run that fast again.

Tate shed like that the first year I had her, her entire back was bald for a week or two.

More signs of global warming? Manny & Web are shedding weird too - they start shedding piles, stop, start again a couple weeks later, stop. They've been shedding off and on for over 2 months. The move from Yakima to Cali probably added to the confusion.
By the way, which is killed by ivermectin: lice or mites? or neither?

Sarcoids are scheduled to be surgically removed on this Saturday, which will be followed with additional ointments help prevent any re-occurance. BTW, Nimir's hair has grown back in! Apparently she just sheds all the way down the the skin... she was naked for a little bit there
