May has a slightly extended v-shaped area on her belly: as if it were swollen, but it's not hot. Any ideas? I'm wondering if it's some sort of hernia from a baby in the past.... She's not due to see the vet for a few weeks, and it doesn't appear to be new, but I'd love to hear if anyone as more info!!

Duh Yeah, I'll take and post some in about an hour. I have/have had mares, and haven't seen anything like it. On the bright side, she doesn't mind me messing with it...

There's no heat, and it doesn't seem to be sore, although she would like me to quit messing with the camera under her belly

Thanks! I'll give him a shout in the morning . It would fit: she's VERY allergic/sensitive to flies and skeeters, and still had bumps when we picked her up (the flies had been bad at the lot). It's been high 70s with 85%-100% humidity, and it's the worst I remember for bugs.

Looking at the lump there are two things that stick out in my mind - 1st - if she has a salt block in with her - take it away. Some horses will go crazy on the salt and can end up overloading their systems with it and cause massive fluid retention to happen. If she is a beaver on her salt/mineral block then I suggest you give her daily dosed plain livestock salt in her feed and start her on a very good vitamin/mineral supplement daily - such as HorseGuard MEga-Dose. This should help that. The other thing which is most likely the cause - No-see-ums or biting flys. This can be a good indication of bites. What I have found works for my big percheron who is extremely sensitive is to dose the following - 10 benydryl(25mg) tablets 2x per day (this dose would be for a horse up to around 1300 pounds) then - by a big tub of vaseline - to that mix in 2 small bottles of the campophenique(sp?) Stir it together and slather on good and THICK over the entire area. The vaseline protects and keeps the area soft so it can heal, and the camph. numbs the area up so any stinging or itchiness is relieved. Also - giving a gram of bute for a few days can help with inflamation of the area. BUT - since I can not check the mare myself Talking to your vet is always a good idea. It is a little too far forward to be any kind of hernia, it looks more like some edema from flys or salt. Sara in WA

Thanks Sara! Yep, it's an allergic reaction to bugs, and she's getting better. I've never heard of the vaseline/treatment, but will try it if it happens again, which I suspect it will, since Deb said she was totally covered with bites and hives when they picked her up. I'm just glad she's getting better , and we've moved her to to the open pasture, so she has less exposure then she did in the paddock. Fingers crossed...

Hydroxazine, 10 tabs 2X a day. Works like a charm!!!! (This is for a 1000 lb horse)
