1) Grain Founder - The horse is fed too much grain. 2) Grass Founder - Horse grazed on lush green pasture - thought to be caused by hormones, probably estrogens, that occur naturally in the forage. Legume plants such as Alfalfa and Clover seem to be the biggest culprits. 3) Water Founder - Overheated horse drinks cold water. Can also cause colic. 4)Road Founder - Caused by concussion to the feet from hard work or fast work on hard footing. 5) Postparturient laminitis - after foaling due to retention of foal membranes or infection in the uterus. 6) Hormonal causes - May occur in mares who are in heat for long periods. 7) Viral respiratory disease - causes rotation of the third phalanx and sole penetration occurs quite rapidly(within 10 days) Some of these animals may completely slough their hooves. 8) Black Walnut Shavings - Do not use for bedding. It will cause Founder. 9) Drugs - such as laxatives or corticosteroids. 10) Overeating - on feeds, such as beet tops. 11) Insufficient Exercise 12) Feet too small to support the animals weight. 13) Horses who have one severely injured leg may place enough weight on one or more of the remaining legs that laminitis may occur.
