Does anyone have experience with this?
Argus has contracted tendons in his RF. I am doing a lot of touchwork with him, trying to loosen them a bit.
I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Katie - is this a NEW thing or something he came to you with?? If it is an old injury then the treatments will be different - but in general with contracted tendons it happens during growth spurts.
if this is growth spurt oriented then you need to change the diet and get this kid moving - LOTS of turnout. some poeple have argued that you need to keep them in when they contract, but alot of recent findings show that getting them outmoving helps to stretch the tendon. BUt - diet is first and foremost. You need to lower the caloric values, but need to keep protien levels up.
What are you currently feeding and I can advise from there.
If this is not a NEW thing - then that shoudl be addressed as well.

This is an old thing. Argus is a horse who came to me via Animal Control cruelty case --- he has been fostered since December. He has spent his whole life (16 years) since weaning locked in a 12 x 16 mare motel pen. So needless to say, his whole body is a complete mess. He lived on stale bread and lettuce most of his life with a teensy bit of wheat hay on occasion. It's amazing he is alive at all.
I have gradually given him increasing exercise. He is up to turnout in our arena with gradual pasture turnout planned eventually.
He's now on teff grass & supplements, beet pulp, rice bran, weight gaining stuff. Just getting him used to eating regular horse feed was a real challenge, as he has never done so.
So this is a horse severely deficient in so many ways and not a normal case.

I suggest having a mineral and enzyme pannel pulled for him. Before recommending a feed/mineral course that might help the tendon issue - it is most likely going to be bes to find out where he is at. My guess - if the tendons are in that situation - it is from 2 things, obviously poor nutrition and second lack of balanced minerals and exercise(so I guess that is 3 things ) I think that offering a high quality free choicecomplete mineral is going to be important to start(more specific things can be changed once you know what bloodwork looks like) - I suggest going to ADMANI.com and ordering Gro-Strong PRECISE loose mineral. Try offering it free choice - let him eat as much as he wants - but if he won't eat it, put 2 tablespoons daily into feed. Second - for now, i would NOT feed the rice bran. Often times in contracted tendon situations the Calcium/magnesium levels tend to be all out of wack and teff hay tends to be slightly higher than average orchard grass in calcium..... Rice bran IMO is not the best choice for fat supplement becaue of how heavily it is unbalanced. Not sure what weight gainer product you are using, but for me - I would use Cool Calories 1000 and make sure to add a very good probiotic to the mix. This won't mess up the balance because it is a simple fat product. Because you do'nt really know what the balances are of his body right now, adding stuff without knowing can actually make things worse. ALSO - Start adding daily MSM to his feed. I would start with 50grams(yes - that is 5 standard scoops of most products) daily. do this for at least 60 days then go to 10 grams a day. This should help some with inflamation and also has alot of other beneficial effects. Any time I see soft tissue stuff, I tend to recommend putting the horses on MSM(other joint stuff is sort of injury specific) Also - based on his care I would assume his feet are a MESS. If he is really high in the heals, try to bring him down realy slowly so he doesn't get sore in his tendons. Exercise will help alot I am guessing... But if you can get some blood pulled and ask the vet to pull a complete mineral level for you that willb e helpful to make sure that whatever you feed is going to get things in his body balanced so he can heal from the inside out. Good for you for taking this kid. What some people do to animals is beyond me!! Sara in Wa

Thanks!
He does not eat the free choice I use, which are ------ minerals, salt, and phos/cal that we have out, so he gets 1-2 tbs daily of everything but salt.
He is on MSM and joint supps, also probiotics.
Not much rice bran, about a cup. He likes it and it hides everything else.
The vet will do bloodwork in about 14 days and I will ask about this panel.
I appreciate all your input.
