I need some advise on how to deal with rain rot. Betty (aka Shaw) not only has several ringworm lesions, but she also has a moderately severe case of rain rot. Unfortunately where she is in QT, there is NO warm water, only very cold well water. The rain rot is on her face, neck, shoulders, and flanks. So far I haven't noticed any on her back. I have been brushing all the lose hair off, picking the scabs off and applying an antifungal solution (Conofite) and also dabbing it all with Chlorhexadine solution. I know I need to bathe her in order to really make a difference, but the weather is just not nice enough. She doesn't have enough fat on her yet to keep her warm if I gave her a bath and there really is no place I can put her to keep out of the elements. I don't want to put a blanket on her since that is what rain rot thrives on, wet hair/skin, lack of oxygen, etc.. She loves the attention, but I can tell she is very uncomfortable due to the saliva marks where she has been itching/biting herself. She is rubbing all the hair off of her neck and face on her water trough (tons of hair floating every day).
Any help/suggestions would GREATLY be appreciated. Sue

Sue - get a product called Mane and Tail Protect SPRAY. Spray the area till damp - do this 2 times daily for 7 days then do it 1 time daily till you notice new hair growth. The mane and tail PROTECT product is the best I have used - even fo prescriptions! It works WAY better than microtek too! also - you might want to jingle your vet and ask about an oral antibiotic based on her condition - or, if that is not an option, at least try to do an immune boost by giving her a dose of Rejuvinex and starting on some immune boosters. If you need help with this, pm me and I can help get a list together for you to help the initial itching, you can give some regular benedryl. It will calm things down a bit and help with the itching. Give 25mg per 100 pounds(so 1 tab per 100 pounds) get the capsules and disolve them in a little warm water - then mix with some feed It is WAY easier than crushing them up. take care, Sara

Thanks Sara! There is a holistic DVM across the parking lot from the vet ER service I manage, so I'll run over and get some of the Rejuvinex for her, I know he carries it :-) I have some Tri-Hist for horses that I can put her back on, it is for allergic reactions. I have a call in to my rDVM to see if he thinks I need to put her back on ab's and whether I should use the diphenhydramine or the Tri-Hist; she just got off of 14 days worth of SMZ TMP tabs and Pen G injections. Poor kid! Thanks again! Sue

I have 2 products that I like people may disagree but schriners and blue-coat. The first workd for about everything but it is spendy for a little bottle of it. Blue-coat has been kicken around for years. It workd real good for ring worm. I have used it on rain rot. The best thing for both and is good old fashion sunshine if it ever gets back. My one mare got rain rot on her neck this year. I just brushed it out and kept it clean it healed on its own without meds. They do itch a lot with it. Sometimes simple solutions works great for the simple average horse problems.

Try Listerine! The blue variety doesn't sting and the horses all smell minty fresh! Works wonders. We have also discovered that the only horses with rain rot (or ring worm) were the ones that have not been supplemented with minerals and pro-biotics. Much of this stuff is really dietary. Try some probiotics in their feed and some mineral supplements too. It also helps with thrush and scaley feet! Go figure!

I guarantee this will work and you will notice hair growth in a week... Original MTG, YOU SHAKE IT UP REALLY GOOD, LOOKS LIKE MILK, Then you will with a rubber glove clean off as many of the sores as you can. gently as it may hurt. Then you want to squirt some MTG generously onto the exposed areas. message gently (Will smell like bacon) but it truly works. My guys get it every year-do not know why. You will want to do this the first day, then wait to see if any skin irritations happen..if none then apply again on day 2, then again for at least a week, every other day. you will notice hair growth in a short time. I swear by this product and my Vet does too. He was amazed at how fast it works. Good luck. Listerine works too but not good if still in a wet enviroment. Where as MTG is a oil base and will stick and work if in a pasture or wet enviroment. Hope this helps?

MTG does work - smells TERRIBLE and is super oily though - which is the downside. Smells like a smoky firepit. lol listerine does work for a variety of things- BUT, the one downside, some horses seem to LOVE the taste lol. I used it on a horses tail that had some nasty little itchy spots - did wonders for the horse WITH the tail, but his pasturemate - well, thought it was VERY tasty and chewed the ENTIRE tail off..... and, the horse was not a known tail chewer lol. I agree about the nutrition. Adding HIGH doses of pre-and probiotics to the diet may help considerably. Start the horse on 5x scoop of probios granules with each meal - and boost things by giving a tube of the gel daily for 7 days. This should help jump start that process Sara

I think I would have that checked just to make sure it's really rain rot, only because we don't get that as frequently on this side of the mountains. And we haven't had wet weather. It's actually been very dry for quite a while now.

Listerine can burn, so be careful using it. Really bad cases of rain rot really do need antibiotics. Mild cases can be solved quickly with Eqyss MicroTek-- www.eqyss.com/pet_microtek_spray4.aspI personally love the smell!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, sorry for the slow response, been out with the horses A LOT this week....What is MTG? Where do you get it?
It was diagnosed as rain rot. I was told she had a blanket on with the owner that sold her to the feedlot and she must have been wet underneath. It is starting to get better already with brushing/picking all the scabs off and giving the areas a good scrubbing with KetoChlor Shampoo and then applying Mane & Tail antifungal spray. The significant hair loss has started to lessen and I haven't noticed any new areas :-) She is on Horse Guard (amt. for 1000#) a vitamin/mineral supplement along with Equine Senior (3#), the Tri-Hist (amt. for 1000#), and a daily dewormer (for 4 more days). She is eating about 10# of Teff grass hay, 10# of alfalfa hay and the above supplement mixture twice daily. After the daily dewormer is finished I'm giving her a regular dewormer, Zimect. Gold (per my DVM). Then on April 1st, she is being vaccinated with a 5 way with WNV. I need to get my pictures downloaded from my camera and then into photobucket so I can let you see how much weight she has put on. I'm sure that by April 20th (2 months of rehab), I can try and ride her, she should have enough meat on her by then :-) Oh...she gets her feet done on the 20th so we'll see how she does for that. I'm not anticipating any problems at all, she has been an excellent patient!

Here's the link to the M-T-G product: www.shapleys.com/It's definitely worth having this in your track trunk. Now, Shapley's is saying they've made a formulation for humans ...http://suluhair.com/. Not sure I'd want to use this on my own hair unless they significantly improved the smell !

On a side note...
I have a TB here with a horrible case of ringworm.
Am reading all these suggestions. So I should get this boy on a high amount of probios? I feed free choice minerals, but should I top-dress instead while we get this under control?
The sad part is I HAVE RINGWORM. Any suggestions? I have the horse kind, which is proving very hard to get rid of.

I was pokin all the time at Rhiannon's ringworm and I didnt end up with it - I didnt think I could in fact the vet said no there were a hundred different kinds. Huh. Well try garlic and/or grapefruit seed extract (diluted) those ususally kill anything. We got rid of it with the creme they use on dogs and cats...dont know what its called.

It's better than any thing that requires a prescription. Use it twice daily (the label will say once daily because it is written for athlete's foot directions) and you need to do it for at least a week. If the "horse" version is more difficult to treat, you may need to use it longer. Also, apply Selsun Blue shampoo (or any shampoo that contains selenium) before you get in the shower, and wash off after about 20-30 minutes. Avoid steroid creams at all costs ~ the rash will look better until it suddenly looks much, much worse!

Thank you, Hope!!
I was too embarassed to go to Kaiser for this... The vet (insert disclaimer about diagnosing human disease) gave me the "yup, that's ringworm" eyebrow. I was already suspecting it since both me and the horse are suffering in unison. It's between my fingers. It's awful, but improving. I am off to the store to pick up Lamisil & Selsun Blue. Kate, do you use the garlic and grapefruit seed extract topically or internally?

Katie, "the mom with ringworm" They are both great to take internally for serious infections but they are also both serious medicine in mega- doses. I would use it only as a topical in this case. By god the bombs will go off on this fungus shortly...!!!

Lamisil and Desenex are both outstanding for ringworm. Also - for horses I know some have had good luck using Kopertox(yes the thrush treatment) on ringworm as well. Don't use it on yourself - it will stain the skin big time. I personally like the PROTECT shampoo alot better than microtek - think it works better. I used it on a foal that had ringworm and within 5 days ther ingworm was gone adn hair was starting to grow back Sara
