I have a 1 1/2 year old 3/4 TB 1/4 Perchie girl. She is always a bit spazzy. always moving her feet, she will run until she is a sweaty mess, which is good for her I am sure. But she is also very pracny throwing her head etc... when tied... Sometimes raring up when she is prancy and I am leading her. It's like she is a stress case and can't help but move her feet...
Leading... I was doing the Parelli thing where you flip not jerk the lead rope when she got to far in front of me, so her response to that is to flip her head, possible rear or try to run harder around me in her anticipation... I have deceided that that does not work for her so now I am turning her in a circle letting her feet move when we are leading and she can't control herself. After a couple of circles she calms down, so that is a plus
But today I tried to get her into the wash area, which she went into during the summer no problem, She refused but after about ten minutes of pointig in the right direction with her lead and applying pressure from behind with the Parelli stick, she went in. No sooner did she run out, right over me. So not to let her get away with that I again tried to get her into the wash area. It took about an hour of me sending her in with the front hand and applying pressure from behind with the carrot stick. I tied her up and stood nearby to catch my breath.
Others said I should leave her tied there for a few hours. I feel that is to harsh. I left her tied for about 45 min to an hour, if that, and... she walked out calmly, even though she was prancing to be untied.
What should I do? keep her tied in different areas for long periods of time so she gets used to things? I think this is to hard. I don't want to do the wrong thing. I have heard that I am to nice to my horses. Mabye I should leave miss prancy pants tied? I don't think anything is going to change her personality. Any suggestions on calming her down? Valium is out of the question, haha
