What are people's thoughts on this, for vigorous trail riding? Can you prevent windpuffs........or reduce them if you already have them? I've never used boots because Peruvians don't ever 'interfere', but my boy has some small puffs front and rear.

Good for you for doing the gaited thing! I trained peruvians for years for curry ranch in southern oregon! GREAT horses. If you are seeing windpuffs I woud recommend you use a support boot that allows for good flexibility. When we train on the trails there we used boots. not so much for arena work, but anytime we were out and about, the horses did get boots and then cold hosed when we returend. I recommend looking at the Classic Equine boots or the Professional choice boots. Look for a boot that does NOT have the ridge inside to support the tendon. On a peruvian we found that this can really cause problems because of the natural way that they move. Look for a smooth boot that wraps completely. The SMB boots are very good as well - although the new Elite boots do have the ridge, so I would look for SMB II's. Most peruvians need small size We booted front and rear on most horses - and also avoiding deep dirt, mud or sand and avoiding hard surface like concrete can really help. Many of these boots are not designed so much to help with crossfire or bumps, but more to help absorb percussion from the movement and impact. I don't think using something like a split boot is a good idea, but a fully supportive wrap around boot is an excellent idea take care, Sara in WA
