Hi Horse Loving Californians:
(PERMISSION GRANTED TO CROSS-POST AND EMAIL THIS, FAR AND WIDE!)
Virginia Handley, an animal welfare lobbyist that goes to Sacramento (she is formerly of Fund for Animals) needs personal letters ***regarding Thoroughbred racehorses going to slaughter*** that she can deliver to legislators as she makes her rounds lobbying. She needs these letters ASAP, so please MAIL your letter to her.
Two pieces of pending legislation are her focus. Read descriptions of them below.
This legislation directly affects racing Thoroughbreds in CA.
This is from Virginia today:
One thing we can do in California is try to stop AB 1016 and SB 863.
If Watermark writes a letter about how race horses are going to slaughter I would be happy to deliver it around the Capitol. Showing up at the hearing(s) would be tremendous. There is a good chance of killing AB 1016, less chance of killing SB 863 even though I expect amendments since the bill doesn’t really do anything yet.
I would like to deliver Watermark’s letter to other legislators, such as Sen Vincent, a big supporter of horse racing but also an animal person.
Please mail your letters to:
Virginia Handley
Animal Switchboard
Fort Mason Center
San Francisco, CA 94123.
ALSO: WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO ATTEND EITHER HEARING. ONE IS MAY 8TH, THE OTHER NOT YET SET. VIRGINIA WOULD REALLY LIKE OUR BODIES IN THE HEARING IN SACRAMENTO ---- IT HAS GREAT IMPACT.
If you want to attend a hearing, contact Virginia at:

SB 863 by Senator Leland Yee re: Horse Racing. ***Oppose.***
Expresses the intent of the Legislature to encourage horse breeding to ensure a sufficient supply of horses for horse racing in California . Expect amendments.
Hearing: Senate Governmental Organization. May 8. Tell them the horse racing industry should ensure the humane treatment and retirement of horses.
AB 1016 by Assemblyman George Plescia re: Race Horses. ***Oppose.****
Allows race horse breeders, trainers, boarders, to sell any horse worth less than $4,000 to pay for unpaid bills without having to go through a court.
Hearing: Assembly Governmental Organization. No date set. Also, Assembly Judiciary. Tell them AB 1016 is an effort to dump losing horses.
