Here's my letter - I attached the pic of Lotti and Plum both saddled. WendyP/Bend, OR Dear Editor, I just wanted to show you the 'Faces of Slaughter'. I have attached a picture of two horses that were slaughter bound - we bought them from the kill buyer just hours before they were scheduled to ship to the slaughterhouse...... Do these look like old ugly skinny unwanted horses? They are wonderful, sound, sane, nice looking, and they are both great trail horses. These mares load, clip, haul, stand for the farrier, tie, cross water - there isn't much they won't do! We don't eat pets in the United States - and that includes dogs, cats, rats, gerbils, and horses. Why do we let foreign owned companies brutally slaughter our pets? If China needed more dogs to eat, would you advocate slaughtering dogs and shipping the meat to China? The slaughter industry is mis-using the term 'Humanely Euthanize' in reference to how the horses are killed - there is nothing Humane about putting a horse in a Kill Box (where it is in blood and brains from the last 100 horses that were bashed in the head) and smashing it in the head with a bolt - assuming it hits it's mark the first time, the horse *might* die instantly........but watch the videos - they don't always hit their target, sometimes they don't even care if they hit their target, they will bash them in the shoulder to disable them - that's gotta hurt. And of course the most recent, and probably most disturbing story, of the mare that was unloaded into the kill pen at the slaughterhouse, and layed down and gave birth to a colt. I believe it is illegal to transport/slaughter pregnant mares, and yet it happens daily. Ask yourself, or your wife or sister, how uncomfortable that mare must have been on the trip to the slaughterhouse. You can read this story at www.lazymapleequine.org . The slaughtering of America's horses is Wrong, and should be stopped. And we shouldn't allow other countries to Slaughter our horses either. If a horse is no longer wanted, or is unhealthy, then it should be humanely euthanized by a licensed veterinarian.........there is no other way to humanely euthanize. I hope you can open your heart and your eyes to what is happening, and realize that all we are asking is that horseowners take responsibility for their animals. We are speaking for those who can't....please listen. Thank you for your time. Wendy Pangle, Bend, Oregon briggsbay@clearwire.net 541-815-3156
