A neighbor's friend brought a horse to our neighbor's place at the beginning of summer to eat down a small pasture. He has not been able to contact the owner since. The horse has been with my aunt's horses since August or so. Does anyone know what the laws are about abandoned horses? We have a possible home for him, but don't want to be charged with horse theft if the original owner comes back.

Brigette,
The legal way ----- Call your county Animal Control department and ask them. There is a process by which you place a lien on the horse, and if the owner does not come back and pay the back board, you can sell the horse to recover some of your costs.
The slightly less legal way ----
I would just make the horse disappear into a good home. If they have not shown up or called in months, you don't want that horse to go back to them anyway.
Move the horse into another home. If the old owner shows up, just play dumb and tell them the horse disappeared one day while you were not home, and you simply figured they had come for them.
People are such jerks.

Hey, at least he came with tack---- the halter that had to be cut off of him because the buckle had been rusted closed.

You need to go to the sheriff. Tell them the situation. Your nieghbor is responcible for any care as long as the horse is there even though it was abandoned. I went through this with a friend of mine. I used to board my horses on his place and he had this dude board there too ( 3 mares) and he just left them there for 3 years he payed only a few months board even left his trailer. One of the mares was in her late 30's and was having a hard time through the winter. My friend was having trouble too. I was the only person who payed their board on time and consitantly. So he was strapped, some city slicker called AC on the mare and my friend did not have the funds to have the vet out so I trailered her in and had the check done on her and she was cleared ( do to age) I wormed her and helped with grain ( by herself) and she picked up fine. Gave my friend the vet report and he gave it AC and they left him alone. It is a hard thing but that is what happens when someone just dumps you with a horse or other animals. You could advise to your friend to send a Certified letter stating that you have so much time to claim your horse and then it will be taken for board or so forth. then there is record of it. I would contact the sheriff though and talk to them . ( call buisness line)
