Today a gentle and courageous little mare named Blaze crossed the Rainbow Bridge to green pastures and warm light. She fought off a trip to slaughter, where she went down in the trailer and was trampled, whole body strangles, extreme weight loss, and more, and was recovering from all that, but a huge and massive tumor in her uterus was not fixable. The vet found the tumor after we called her, as this last week she had been experiencing signs of pain and going down. We were able to keep her comfortable for brief periods of time on Banamine, but it was only a matter of time before that wouldn't work, and she would go down with colic like pain. Upon the advice of the vet, and since we did not want this sweet old mare to suffer, we elected to humanely euthanize her. She went easily and peacefully on one of the first sunny days we have had in a long time. She was so quiet on the ride over from Debs and waiting at the clinic, never hardly moved. When My husband and I got there we had to wait for Dr. Michele a while and so I went in the back with her, feeding her grain and talking to her and pettting, hugging, and rubbing her. Her eyes were clear and the sun came in the windows and it was nice, she enjoyed looking out the window at the other horses.I know she felt that someone cared about her and for that I am glad, it was worth the whole long ordeal of her improbable rescue. Its a shame that it wasn't her that gave up, just the circumstances of her poor battered body. She was a very courageous and kind mare, and I won't forget her. I told her she would go to lush pastures where it was warm and quiet. She seemed at peace. Hers is a story we will tell in full, but wanted all of you to know, so you could wish her godspeed.

sh*t...all I can say is sh*t! I am so tired of all the abuse to these majestic animals. I am sick of being sick watching the demise of our American heritage. I am sick of our government allowing this to happen while the pockets of the abusers fill. I am sick of crying over senseless cruelty.

RIP beautiful Blaze. I am thankful that, in this world where she knew much neglect and abuse, her last moments were spent with love and peace. Heidi - you and the other volunteers are angels on earth. Thank you for your strength and endless compassion.

Blaze was an inspirational story of courage and determination...her story deserves to be told and will be with dignity and heart, a representative example of our beloved equines deliberately put in harm's way. Godspeed, Blaze, and your anguish and long hard fight was not in vain.

None of us that followed Blaze's story will ever forget her and what she went through. So sad, and yet to hear that she left us in such a kind and peacful way, makes me so thankful for people like Heidi and the other volunteers from the lot. Blaze made an amazing comeback and showed such strength and courage. We can learn so much from these creatures. Thank you for showing her such love Heidi. May she rest in green pastures.

So sad.. She knew she was loved and cared for. A tumour is something nobody expected, but is not the result of abuse. Any horse can die of cancer. She was saved from a horrible death and knew love. That's what matters in the end. Thank you Deb and Heidi for always being there at the bad times.

Rest in Peach sweet Blaze Thank you Deb and Heidi for trying so hard to make her well. She left you peacefully, having known love and kindness for the last months of her life. It may afford little solace to you both at this time, but I'm sure that it meant everything to Blaze. Again, Thank You.

Oh no. I'm so sad. After all she went through. To be given a second chance and then have something stupid like a tumor take it away. What a shame. God Bless you Heidi and Deb and the others who loved and cared for her and gave her that second chance.

Heidi, Deb, Sam, and Blaze~ God bless each of you for teaching all of us about courage, strength, unconditional love, and forgiveness. We have all been so blessed by your unbelievable work; each one of you worked so hard for this girl. We are left with a special place in our hearts where not only Blaze rests, but the humans who saved her as well - and she was saved.
My heart is breaking, and the tears won't stop. The sadness of her loss is overwhelming on this end; I cannot imagine the pain on your end. In time, we will remember the lessons she taught us and feel joyful, recalling her amazing story and sharing her love and spirit to live. Thank you so much for giving so much to us.
