~ Shipped to slaughter 4/15/07 ~BAIL: $700 14 year old, 14.2h, bay Quarter Horse type mare. Hard to handle on the ground does not respect peoples space, herd bound but kind once caught. Straight legged, even though her feet are not trimmed she does have nice feet. She has a kind eye but is not handled. We were told that she was broke but we do not know first hand. She would be best to be restarted. 4/10/07 UPDATE: PER DEB"This girl is a barrel racing horse, she is broke to ride in a hackamore so all the work has been done she just needs somewhere to feel safe again..I think she would be a great horse with someone experienced... " And more: Got some more information on this girl...Per Chuck (via Sam) she was "rode hard and put away wet". She's broke, but apparently was never given the chance to learn that people could actually be loving and something to look forward to seeing, too. She's hard to catch, but I think with the right person (someone with patience) she could learn that being caught doesn't always equate to a hard workout. Sometimes it might mean getting a chance to graze, have some grain, or just be spoken to softly. She just hasn't seen the good humans yet. Please contact Deb Logstrom (AvalonMistFarm@msn.com) for more information. PLEDGED BAIL AMOUNT!!! $175 - ($525 STILL NEEDED) Bridgetah - $25 Swssgirl - $100 agilitygal $25 Bridgetah - $25 (moved from Olympia)

LAST CHANCE for this gorgeous mare! She needs bail + QT and a home, before 10:30-11 if at all possible to avoid the truck.

I know, she's got a beautiful face and a very kind eye. Unfortunately, since she's not handled......she could be one of the first picked to go on the next truck. All of these horses will be at higher risk since they've already escaped it once....

I like the looks of this girl. I hope her assesment does not doom her. Just because she is unhandled, does not mean she is a bad girl. She just needs someone who has the right skills to help her out.

According to Deb, none of her horses except Breezy has had any interest (she is the PS for Anne, Breezy, Jewel and Lucy). The day before shipping is so stressful

I have Vegas. She is older. Was also used hard. She has really come around. I did some round pen work with her, and she was following me like a puppy! She is still distrustful of men if they look like cowboys, but is fine with men who are nontreatening like my husband. I love her dearly and each day the bond grows. It just takes some kindness and some time! Oh and she was also hard to catch on the lot. I have not really had a problem with that.

And, Vegas is very well-trained and smart. Each day she shows us more of what she knows!

Shoot! I just bought a trailer so I have something to haul Miss Callista in after I pick her up from Deb on Saturday. I was looking at Shirley Temple (we need 2 horses) but she's safe for now at Wendy's so not in danger of being shipped. I could scrape up half her bail and have a stall/home/love waiting if someone can help out here. I hate having to ask for help but figured a trailer was kind of important to have with Callista coming home this weekend. Also someone needs to explain what all is entailed in QT her afterwards as this might be the deciding factor (other than money) in taking her off the lot. Actually this same offer would apply to either Jewel or Lucy (since she seems to be a crowd favorite). My heart goes out to Jewel for not being loved and just used but honestly we are just looking for another horse so Callista doesn't have to be lonely and so we can ride together.

THIS is why I'm trying hard to talk my husband into a cruddy small house w/ at least 2-3 acres instead of a big house on a non-existant lot....so I can take home a horse or two like Jewel and spend the time working w/ them and bonding so that they can get a good home. He thinks I wouldn't ever part w/ them......
She'd be a great project for someone, and such a pretty face.

Imabirdmom. Is that an offer?

Yes it's an offer. I made the same offer on Lucy. I can come up with $350 and have a home for her EITHER Jewel or Lucy (not both) if someone can spring the rest of her bail (I could even pay them back before summer). I do have questions about QT before I commit though. How long do they have to stay in QT and can I QT her here? What is involved?

Call Sam or Deb regarding qt. They might approve you for qt if you have adequate facilities and are in WA.
QT time is dependent on whether or not she is currently sick (strangles), how long she's been on the lot. Their policy is "at least 30 days qt at CBER approved facility." If you have your own property you may be able to be approved, but I don't know your situation. Also, you're supposed to keep them from all other horses (including Collista) - kinda hard if they're in the same trailer. If Collista already has recovered from strangles and has had all her vaccines, she might be okay. I am not a cber "official" though so CALL SAM OR DEB!

Hi Kathy - I would go w/ the horse you REALLY want and that you think would work best for you and your family. CBER wants everyone to be happy, including the horse! Let us (and especially the PS's!!!) know which one you decide on so we can work on the others......welcome to the rescue family! Stacie
