"This mare was not good at all about being ridden! When saddled she tried to lie down when the rider got on her she reared he stepped off and she continued to flip over. CBER will not place this horse due to how dangerous she is. We would like to raise the money to have her humanely euthanized."18 - 20 yr old, 14.3h, liver chestnut mare. She was nervous being separated from her buddies, but she was responsive in the halter and being handled on the ground. She is older but still appears to have a lot of spirit. She was sound at time of assessment. We were told by the FLO that she is gentle and broke but do not know first hand as we have not ridder her ourselves. $600.00Contact Deb Logstrom for more information at: AvalonMistFarm@msn.com~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ $ 20.00 Riding Assessment donated by gfvanvleck! Has anyone been told if Sassafras has been ridden?. I have a place that she could be and have her baby, but I also have 4 nephews that are from 9 up that could help me with her and ride her after the baby. They would love to be able to ride and give a horse lots of love.

CBER mentioned it as a possibility on their site. I can't help but look at her and think this is exactly the type of horse that is at BIG RISK of shipping.

I thought I read somewhere she has a home offer if she is bailed? Am I just wishful thinking? I can't find it anymore.

Ok, I hate being the one to post this, but I have some bad news.
Here is the quote regarding her riding assessment:

Yes, she is in big danger of shipping. It's up to us to make sure she doesn't get on that truck.

poor girl, could there be some pain issues? I know the truck is coming tomorrow, and I'd rather have her be euthanized than shipped, but is there a way she could get a vet check?

So will the bail amount ($600) cover the FLO's price and euth?

CBER does not own this horse...we will still have to buy her in order to euthanize her. Hopefully her price will be reduced, but I do not recall that ever happening.

I do not believe that Chuck will lower her price. She's healthy and not lame, so she can unfortunately make the trip in the truck without a problem. In the past he may have done that but only for horses that are horribly suffering and would not have been able to make the journey anyway....(Hamlet, St. Theresa come to mind)
If someone is wanting to adopt her as a pasture pet/companion only, we can look into that per Wendy:
They would have to legally agree in writing not to hold CBER responsible for any injuries that may occur due to someone riding her.
A vet exam is not a bad idea - she could have a pain issue that caused that...my friends horse never, ever bucked, but he looked like a rodeo bronc one day out of the blue. His hip was out due to his scuffle w/ the gelding next door over the other geldings mare.
I am NOT saying there is a guarantee she will ever be able to be ridden. Her original assessment did say
If she handles okay on the ground for vet and farrier purposes.....we can see.

It's too bad that there's no longer anyone able to ride the lot horses before they're posted on the website- if there was someone willing to do it before listing, we could avoid getting attached to these types of horses I understand CBER's policy of not adopting her because of her dangerous behaviors. I work at an animal rescue and we do not adopt out dangerous animals for the safety of the adopters and the reputation of the organization.

For every batch of horses we see/save, there is a truckload that Chuck ships. These are the ones that either the FLO doesn't make available to CBER, or CBER passes over for more adoptable horses. If Sam and crew can't handle them, we don't see them. Because CBER has given this mare a name and taken her picture, she will at least be given the chance for a humane end, as opposed the the faceless ones we are sheltered from.
Again, if no one can meet the "pasture pet" only requirement, how much money is needed? I assume the $600 includes CBER's mark-up - can that go toward euth?

I know this will be unpopular.....
Maybe Sassafras should be allowed to ship.
Take the money that would be spent to purchase and euthanize her and use it to bail a feedlot horse that has a better chance at going on to lead a quality life.

This is one of those very hard decisions. There are others listed here that don't have her history and her learned behaviors. She obviously didn't want anything to do with that particular rider/handler. Time and funds are limited. Others are waiting for their last chance.

She obviously didn't want anything to do with that particular rider/handler. Time and funds are limited. Others are waiting for their last chance. We can't let her suffer the horrors of the truck, etc. just because of this incident. She has proven she can be handled on the ground, I'm sure there is some reasonable explanation for her incident. It's not like she attacked her handler. If someone wanted to take her as a companion horse she would obviously be just fine. We also need to keep in mind that the atmosphere at the feedlot is probably not one we would call tranquil. Even the best trained horses can go off over something at any time. Her original assessment stated she was nervous being away from her buddies. I don't want to see the tone of thread take to condemning her.

What about the possibility of her being pregnant?? The baby is to be killed too?? Is there someone out there that's wants her as a "pasture pet"? If so why not pay the money and let her foal and live her life/....is she safe on the ground?? Also how did she get to be 20 yrs old if she is so dangerous? Maybe she's been a broodmare and never ridden? Surely it's possible the former owner/trader lied to Chuck??

jemn - I know how you feel. The truth is none of them should ship. None of them should be "condemned". But this is advanced triage on a field of battle. To limit the losses the Docter has to make decisions that allow the MOST to live with quality of life given sadly lacking time and resources. I have to agree with Katie. The truck WILL be full. Let another one live that can be bailed and sent to a good home.

I don't think anyone was condemning her jenm. It's just that there are MANY available that haven't reared and tried to flip themselves over. That's a big step to say some other gentle soul should ship so we can save a horse that failed her riding test.
Who has room for a companion only horse? I have a few and they still cost as much as the healthy/ridable ones. That's hard to justify unless this someone has unlimited funds and acreage. I think if we've had a horse for years (or not), but it's already ours, we make sure it has a good life even if it can't be ridden. That's alot to ask of someone to adopt one as a pasture pet, who hasn't bonded and loved this horse for awhile.
No one is saying she belongs on the truck, but if we bail and euthanize her, who goes on the truck in her place?... In a perfect world, none would ship. I think we all know that is a fallacy.

Will CBER waive their part of the fee for this girl, or have they already done so?
