Or possibly chiropractor?
Kyowa is a very pretty registered 5 yr old paint mare. She's a chestnut tobiano - about 15.2 (ish?) We took her in this winter after her owner neglected her for almost a year after an injury.
We've had a local chiropractor look at her - and he was able to adjust her pelvis by quite a bit. He has been telling us that he thinks she should make a full recovery after she regains the muscle tone that she has lost.
It's been a couple months now, and unfortunately, that muscle doesn't seem to be coming back. The injury went untreated (mostly likely a bad fall) for almost a year - so it may take some time to bring her back. At this point her left hip muscle is very atrophied, and because of the abnormal gait - she's now getting some deformities in her hind hooves.
What we've done:
regular trimming - which unfortunately requires pain killers and tranquilizers in advance. In addition to her hips hurting her when you lift her hind feet - she also has some behavioral issues with kicking out. We're slowly working on ALL of these issues - but juggling the pain/behavior problem is some times tricky. (It's tough to reprimand when you know they're hurting - and that's how the habit started.)
biotin/glucosamine supplements - whichever brands have been donated recently
hand walking after adjustments - with massaging, liniment rubs, and slowly backing up a slight incline - a few steps at a time
hillside pasture - she is in a pasture that's on a slight slope. She only stood while in a paddock - so we were hoping this particular pasture would help her rebuild some muscle tone. She runs, bucks and plays...
What she needs: someone with some more ideas. Kyowa would do best in an experienced home who can really focus on her recovery. I would like to see someone keep up with her massages and adjustments when needed - but for now her pelvis seems to be staying in place.
Her previous owner RODE her in this condition!!! So - she is broke to ride - if we can ever get her to make a full recovery. I surely wouldn't ask her to carry weight right now - and wanted to strangle the previous owner for that and many other reasons...
We will discuss an adoption fee with the right home. We'd like to try to recover some of our expenses with her, but know that's not possible. (I can choose to live in a fantasy world, thank you very much. ) But- anything would help. Her registered name is Quo Vadis Kyowa - going back to the Qtr horse mare Quo Vadis. (Poco Bueno on the bottom, Leo & Three Bars on top.)
Because we live in Po-dunk - I have been unable to post pictures on here - but have them to email if anyone is interested. (And I'll be bugging C-cat or the Dawg to post some on here for me. lol)
