On Thanksgiving, I'm going to take a quiet moment to say 'thanks' for all the GOOD people like you, who did the right thing by their animals, when it was time for them to go.

My sympathy a good pony is hard to replace... but if you ever use that bridle again- you need to turn the bit around - you're using the curb backward... and that's painful but not very effective.

I didn't elaborate on my response on this because I thought it had already been addressed here......but that was on the same pic under picture contest. Sorry about that. This pic was taken on a day when I wasn't home. The girls (then 9 and 11) went out and rode and took the pics themselves so I wasn't home to make sure everything was on properly. I pointed the same mistake out to them a few days later when i edited the pics and gave them a "proper talking to" lol Good eyes on all the people who noticed that. I thought I was the only one out there who was that "picky"...

She LOVED that little girl! Thank you for giving them both that!!!! God bless all of us!!She is an angel now as she was here..... I thought this would be a good time to tell you all about Destiny so you would understand just how true the above statement it. We got Desting about 5 yers ago for $165. A friend of ours was driving home one night and almost ran her over because she was standing in the middle of the road. She conatacted the owners and purchased her for that amount (just to keep her safe as this was not the first time she had been in the road) and we fell in love and took her. She was 6 yrs old at the time. What you cannot see in the pictures is that her right rear leg is fused at the knee joint at a right angle. if you look REAL hard in the pic of her running you can see it. This happened because, when she was born she was breech. When the breeder pulled her, they dislocated the joint and never bothered to fix it. it fuzed at a permanent right angle. Now, before I get bombarded on how cruel it was to ride her.... she was THOROUGHLY checkd out by our vet before any riding happened. There was no arthritis no bone scuurs, her hoof grew normally and she never acted in pain. We did give her joint supplements in her feed just in case. There was noting in the workl this little gal loved more than going on a leisurely trail ride. She was fascinated by birds and squirrels...lol. She also game my (then) 7 year old daughter the confidence to ride. Little Meadow (that is my middle daughter) was scared to death to ride the other horses. However when she met Destiny something changed. She rode her from the time she was 7 till she was almost 10.....then we decided that she was probably to heavy. After that Destiny gave nice slow rides to my (then 1 yr old). We made the concious decision to breed Destiny to our pony stud (now a gelding) because we knew that after a while Destiny couldn't be ridden anymore and because she had the most amazing personality. We wanted a little cart pony/riding pony for my youngest daughter also. Everything went well and April 15th of this year we got "April". She is every bit her mothers daughter!!! At 7 months old we can pick out all her feet, lead her, back her, walk and trot her on the lead rope, put blanked off and on her, bathe her etc...and all this is done by my 3 yr old daughter. Now for the sad part.... ...At the beginning of Oct we noticed that she was standign around an awful lot and not her usual self. During a close examination we found that she had wrapped a piece of wire around her gimpy leg just above the hoof. We unwound it and cleaned the wound and doctored it for a couple of days and pretty soon she was her old self again. Well about a week after finding it we saw an abcess pop up pn her leg just above the cut (which had been healing nicely). We called the vet out and he x-rayed the leg. There was a piece of wire still in her leg and had hooked around her tendons. The surgery required to get the wire out was around $2500. Even at that he couldn't guarantee that ashe wouldn't fight some sort of infection for the rest of her life. The decision was made to put her down. I know some people out there will feel like we messed up and should never have another animal as long as we live. I know this because I feel the same thing every day of my life now, but then I go stroke the neck of one of my rescues or toss the stick of an abandoned dog we took in....and I realize I am human and I make mistakes. I am just sorry that Destiny had to pay for it. That is Destiny's story. I know there are thousands of wonderful ponies out there, but to me there are NONE like her. I love you pretty pony. Meadow

Oh meadow, not the case! I went to the pasture one day to find one of my full sized horses with a piece of wire wrapped around her leg! I don't know how long it was there, she isn't ridden much, but it was a little swollen... so we put her in a stall to watch it... it became VERY swollen and she was lame for a while after that, and now she has a white ring around that leg!!! it never broke the skin... wire just can do a lot of damage I guess! we don't have wire fence, so I don't know where it came from, it looked to be a piece of hot wire tho. Now, if it was going to cost that much to get a piece out, I might have had to think long and hard....
You can't blame yourself for her getting a wire wrap... you did your best, horses just FIND trouble.
as for the curb... our old pony rides in a curb, sans curb strap, and I can't tell you how often someone comes to yell at me (well, they did when we still rode him!) and tell me that it was somehow cruel to not use the strap... the bit sure did flip all the way over in his mouth, but he never cared.... and if we put on the strap, he went berzerk... his lower jaw was odd looking, and I wondered if he had had a previous bad event there... a fracture or crushing injury? anyway, it hurt him and so we just didn't use one. I did finally buy a leather one for a horse, and put it on there REALLY loose, the bit still flipped over, but no one came to yell at me any more!!!
There is something so wonderful about a pony and their kids. :-) Poncho is retired now.... he takes care of Acorn, our cushing's mini.

Here is Poncho, with the curb strap, running at over 35 years old, with my (way too big) daughter in the state gymkhana finals last year... he bumped up to Division 6 (faster division) and took 6th in the state overall!!! LOL!!! against all horses!!! ooops, and with that darned flipped over curb too!!!

Meadow, I really don't think you should beat yourself up over this. I don't believe that most people (even experienced know-it-alls ) would have thought that an XRay was needed after unwrapping a piece of wire from a horse's leg. After all, you found the guilty culprit and removed it, right? I think this is one of those bizarre flukes that just happens in life (and apparently happens to horses more than to any other of God's creatures!) The important thing is that you cared enough to pursue it when she didn't get better, and you made an informed decision that included consideration of her best interests. In my eyes, that's the absolute best thing any person could do for an animal in their care. We all have our own ceiling on what we can afford to spend on our animals, without endangering the welfare of our other animals or family. There is no shame in that. I think you should be proud that you gave Destiny a wonderful life with a job that any pony or horse would be lucky to have: taking care of two little girls who adored her. What's better than that? Hugs to you and your girls as you get used to life with out her; and best wishes for a long healthy life for April!
