July 19, 2006, an incredibly skinny, but still beautiful palomino mare was listed on the CBER website. She was that truly dark gold with a silvery mane and tail. Trigger had nothing on her! Unfortunately, nobody wanted her as she was a bit arthritic and wasn't looking at being around too many more years. Heidi ended up taking her home and starting the process of bringing her back from starvation. She was pretty ill and Heidi almost lost her. After getting Butterscotch stabilized and feeling better, she called and asked if I would take her. So... I can't say that Miss B was the sweetest horse ever, certainly not the nicest to be around. Far from it. In fact, she was downright grumpy. But she had an air about her. One of dignity, a little haughty. She certainly wanted you to know you were in the presence of royalty. You could tell by the way she dismissed you after being served her old gal mash. Yup. In her day, this girl must have been treated like a queen. She sure was beautiful enough. A few months went by, she was gaining weight nicely. Her teeth had been done, feet were good, but she just didn't want to be a riding horse. Jut the thought of it made her cranky! Too many achy joints and old age pains. And besides. She'd done her time. Probably in the show ring. Carting adults and kids alike. After all. She was a beauty. I put the word out with my friends that I had another rescue that needed a forever home. This one needed an extra special home. One who would treat her as she deserved (and expected). I got a call from a lady I didn't know. She had been referred by a friend. Said she was doing her thesis on equine massage. Needed a buddy for her gelding, as well, but she needed an old retired horse that had some aches and pains and would really benefit and appreciate a daily massage. I said, "Do I have the girl for you!" After checking out the new palace digs, er, I mean, stable and property, and everything passing inspection quite nicely, Butterscotch moved into her new home. Only three miles from my house, this was really nice as I could check on her regularly. Our little queen truly enjoyed her last year and a half of life. Living it up with green pastures and a daily massage. Could it get any better than that? I got the call on Sunday. Butterscotch had gone down. Couldn't get back up. The vet came right away and put her down gently and peacefully with her loving owner at her side. All who knew this grand old lady will sure miss her. She was a real beauty. Royalty too, you know.
I don't usually write much, but I just can't help but think this horse was very special to someone during her lifetime. It probably would have hurt them terribly to know she had been sent to be slaughtered by some uncaring fool who wanted his/her last dollar out of this beautiful mare. But her life really did turn out happily ever after.
Could I get someone to post her feedlot pic on here. The middle full body shot. Thanks Tash!
