Oh apache - your words are so poignant. And so many of us can relate to your statement "Painter for me". Those of us who have been involved in the the CBER feedlot rescues for a while, each and every one of us, has our own Painter. I'm so sorry that Levi was your Painter*. I know how hard it hurts. My thoughts are with you tonight. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~* Painter (2006) was an adorable paint gelding who was shipped to slaughter from the Yakima feedlot in February 2006 - for many of us, Painter's shipping was a huge shock, because we all tried to so hard to save him, yet he shipped anyway .... and this woke us all up to the fact that no matter how much we try and how much we hope .... sometimes, evil does prevail. It is against THAT EVIL that we pledge to enact the horse protection laws and we work so hard, every day, to ensure that every horse is safe from slaughter. We lost another beautiful paint named Painter in 2007, as well. Rest in Peace Levi. And, Rest in Peace Painter2006 & Painter2007. We still mourn for you. ~ Painter 2006 ~ ~Painter 2007 ~

Painter haunts me, too.
He was the first slaughter horse I ever knew about, and what led me to CBER when I was doing reserach on the net. I would have taken him, was what I thought after seeing his photo and reading about him. He came up under my search for "horse slaughter" online -- I remember it said something like 20(?) horses had been saved that day, during an unexpected shipping, all except for Painter.
RIP Painter, baby. But don't rest too long -- you're sound and happy and free, now.

I'm so sad he was lost to a godless end. I was afraid to sign in and come look. What a sweetie, you could see it in his photos. He deserved better than this. He deserved for humans to take care of him the way he took care of them. It's heartbreaking. Em RIP sweet one. Just hold on tight past the scary or painful part, and you'll arrive in a place worthy of you, and more wonderful than you could've imagined on earth. "This river flows from dark to light, So I will say adieu, my friends. If my ship sails from your sight, It doesn’t mean the journey ends, But simply that the river bends." J. Enoch Powell Em GOD!! That just makes me cry everytime I read that....."Just hold on tight past the scary or painful part"...... Kelly

Sometimes I wonder why I come here and read these sad stories. When I here a horse was shipped it haunts me. I think about that horse alot. I so wish I had lots of money and land to take them all. When I found out what happens to them in Mexico I cried. I wish I never read the article because now I think about that alot also. It tears me apart. I so wish there was more that I could do.

I know what you mean, MiniMom, and feel a lot of the same things.
I keep coming back because the ones to be saved need to be saved and the ones lost deserve the honor of our tears and heartbreak. When I want to flee, I remember they can't, and how (to me) fleeing means abandoning them in their last moments.
Even when they are shipping, we can give them our hearts and think them through to the other side. I do believe that makes a difference for them.
Even just caring about these horses helps, because there is always something to do -- from hands on to signing petitions and making phone calls. Maybe in the future, with all our combined efforts, we'll save them all. Until then, we're their witnesses, that they existed and that they mattered.
But I hear you. It's a hard, painful balance.

And both Painters should have been safe and happy at new homes. I guess they are, only not here. Thanks for reminding me of Painter II. Em
