For those of you who remember Clyde I thought I would let you know that he died today. He seemed to have a good day yesterday but this morning he didnt come to eat his breakfast. When I went out to him there was nothing obviously wrong .. he just seemed far away. Hard to explain but I just knew he was dying. He never showed any sign of pain or distress. But he didnt want to come to eat. After awhile he just laid down and died. He was old as dirt and a physical train wreck but his spirit was strong .... the old boy was a trouper and we will miss him.
Typing through my tears... run free..young and strong again Clyde

I'm so sorry you lost this horse you obviously love so much -- thank you for taking such good care of him.
It's unusual to hear of a natural ending for a horse ... I'm so glad it was quick and painless and on his own terms.

OH, Pagober! Of course I remember dear Clyde! I am so sorry to hear he is gone, its hard on the people who loved him! You have had him a long time considering his alternative at the lot and you have put so much special care into him, I will never forget him and sounds like he went peacefully and naturally. Thank you sooooo much for giving him that and a loving last couple years. I remember hauling him off the lot to foster care till you got him, he was so happy to get out on pasture at the time. Bless you and your family, he is feeling good and strong now in the pastures of heaven.

So sorry for your loss.
But when I go, I want to just lay down and die, like Clyde did!

Thank you all for your kind words. We buried Clyde today. The folks who came with the backhoe were new too us and I was a bit apprehensive. I couldnt have been more pleased though. They were so so careful to preserve Clydes dignity as much as possible during the process. He rests now along side his sweetheart, Daisy, who passed away mid summer.

pagoober, I remember Clyde from way back when. What a sweetheart he was! And kudos to you for doing right by him. More horses should have the last years that Clyde did. Thank you!
