Sweet Charity was returned to Angi recently because her adopter was moving out of state. She was fat and healthy looking but unfortunately she came back with a belly full of sand. She has been colicy off and on and Angi had 2 vets working over the past week to get her cleared. Charity was still resisting eating her psyllium and beet pulp, but she had resumed eating some hay, had gotten used to wearing a blanket, and had stopped showing signs of being in pain so we were hopeful that with time she would be ok. I was at Angi's last night and helped her feed. Charity was up, relaxed and called for her supper, she seemed to be doing better though she did have a snotty nose. Last night when Angi checked on her she was down but seemed to be resting and not in distress. This morning she found her still down and Angi was not able to get her up. She seemed to have given up. The vet returned and examined her. He said that she did not have a blockage, and she had not ruptured, but that the sand had irritated her bowel to a point that she had some seepage which had caused her to go septic. When he drew blood Angi said it looked black. There was nothing that could be done for her. This was hard on Angi, especially after we lost Hope in oct. She had been so happy to have Charity back, and was looking forward to riding her in a few weeks when they Drs let her start riding again. Angi hasn't been able to work since Sept (when her hand got smashed.) She is hoping to be back working in a month or so, and only just started receiving disability, and now has spent almost $1000 for vet and meds for Charity, and still needs to find funds to have her hauled away.

I'm so sorry to hear that.........Angi has had a tough time of it recently. And Charity was one of "my" girls. I always thought she could have been Peruvian X.

I'm so sorry to hear that.........Angi has had a tough time of it recently. And Charity was one of "my" girls. I always thought she could have been Peruvian X. I know she was. Charity was a big bluffer. She played hard to catch but she wasn't afraid of anything we could find, it was more like she didn't want to be bothered then fear. Once she was haltered she led, loaded in a trailer and allowed the vets to work on her without any trouble. She was a nice big built mare, very confident and assured. It's heart breaking.
