On Thursday January 31, 2008 a wonderful mare Lena had to be laid to rest by the vet. Lena was owned by my dear friend Cathie (lucy 1994 on the RO board). She was due to foal in less then two months. Lena is royalty in my eyes. She had a way about her. Her papers looked like the who's who of the Quarter Horse World. She was a very accomplished reining mare with the Avila's. Lena was bred this past April to a beautiful palomino stallion and we were so looking forward to the foal. "Lena's Frosted Frenchman" was going to be one dynamic baby. Cathie and I have been dreaming about what she was having.... a yellow colt, a red filly, it didn't matter- Frenchie was going to be incredible. On Thursday Lena started showing signs of early labor. Cathie was so worried. She truly loves this mare!! The vet was called and everyone was preparing for an early foal, never even thinking something might go wrong with Lena. After the vet arrived, it was determined that there was a tear in the uterus, and the mare was septic. The foal likely passed 24 to 48 hours prior and Lena was trying to abort. Lena was humanely euthanized and laid to rest on Cathie's farm with her foal. Our hearts are broken over the loss of this truly spectacular mare and her baby. Cathie- I know how much you loved Lena. She was with you for a reason. I am so sorry you lost your girl. She will truly be missed.

What a devastating, double loss. I'm so sorry for you both. I know there are no words that will lessen your pain, but please know that all of us on the board are with you in spirit.
Rest in Peace, Ms. Pep O Lena.
Rest in Peace, Frenchie.
