Trainer/clinician Raye Lochert is coming to Humboldt County this weekend. I never heard of him before and he doesn't have much info on his website, other than the stuff he's selling. Does anyone here know anything about him?

I've heard good things about him, but haven't met him personally. Katie from Watermark Farm just had one of her boarders horses move over to his place for training, you might try contacting her, I'm sure she would have some insight about Raye.

Yes, in fact I recall Katie saying in a post (on trailers, of all things) that she herself has worked with him, though I don't know in what capacity.

Thanks - unfortunately I think Katie is on vacation right now. This really isn't being advertised really well, and he's calling it "general horsemanship" because I don't think he knows who/what's going to show up. I have a green horse, an unridden horse and a bucking horse - I have no idea which would be the most appropriate for this venue. I guess I could email for some sort of lesson plan. Maybe I'll do the $15 spectator instead of the $350 participant and just check it out. I'd rather spend 2 days working with my horses than watching someone else, though.

Hey Beckybee,
I am back from vacation and yes, I know Raye.
He went thru John Lyons' trainer program and graduated at the top of his class (which is saying alot, this is a very grueling and expensive program). He continues to work with John and Josh Lyons and occasionally hosts clinics with them here. He is trying to get away from the "John Lyons Certified" thing so does not use that a lot. And yes, his website SUCKS! I need to tell him that!!
Raye's clinics are really informative and worth the money, IMO. I have attended three of them with my horse, who was an unstarted 4 year old at the time. I did my first rides on him at a clinic.
One of my board clients has a horse in training with Raye right now. This horse is a semi-feral Belgian gelding from a PMU farm. A hard horse to send out for training as he could be messed up easily, but I knew Raye could handle it without screwing him up.
Anyway.....Raye's Groundwork clinics are great. I think you would also get a lot out of going as a spectator as well.
Do you have a round pen?? Raye does a lot of roundpen work at first.

Thanks Katie! I'll probably just go as a spactator. I know I would get more out of it with my own horses, but my confidence isn't high enough to be part of the show. If I knew it was groundwork or focusing on green or problem horses I would participate, but I have a feeling there are going to be more finished horses there. I don't want to drag everyone down to my level. It definitely is great to have someone more experienced there when you are doing new stuff with young horses for guidance and support.
On top of all that, the trainer I work with also has a thing against touring clinician dudes - I don't want to piss her off by seeing someone else! Plus, I can get a lot of one-on-one time with her for $350, which is probably more valuable for us right now.
I don't think they have a roundpen at the venue unless they are setting up a panel one. I've been using one at the stable I board at, but I don't have one on my pasture property, so we have been "longeing" (no circles, though!). Lyons is the first NH book I read and their is a lot I liked about his approach, but his running the horse to submission I have found to be counterproductive for me and my horses. Lyons (and the other NH gurus) can do things at a fast pace that I don't have the experience to pull off. Everyone has to do what works for them and each specific horse, so I can see why Raye would want to break out from under Lyons certified label - there would be an expectation that he follows a set program or approach (which by definition I think would be the antithesis of natural horsemanship).
