Can you tell me more? How long of a lease are you considering? What conditions?
We are looking for an appropriate pasture mate for a BLM mare we just adopted. Our mare is proving to be quite gentle and was foaled in 99.

I would really prefer that she is close to me or someone that I know and trust so that checkups can be made. I have no doubt that the people on this board are all trustworthy and take good care of their horses... but I have been wrong before and would want to be able to do checkups at will. I would consider a year lease, but that would be absolutely dependant on the fact that she is cared for up to my standards - I would pick her back up in a heart beat if I thought she wasn't being cared for right.
She really needs a job, and she is more then capable, so I don't know that I would want her to go somewhere unless she was going to be ridden on a regular basis. She is a mountain horse and has probably been a hunting horse in the past, but she is safe for basically anyone to ride. She is ridden western or bareback, and is kept barefoot right now since she had bad shoes on when I got her that gave her absesses. These have healed up, but I am leary of putting shoes back on her... since she has the tough appy feet though, she is good to go.

We are in Arlington. I thought you might be in Western WA just based on the photos. We are just one week into horse ownership with our BLM Mustang/Appy (I had a pony when I was younger). Our girl was foaled in '99 and rounded up from the Warm Springs herd in '01 (see the CBER link for "Neon"). I had my first lesson with her today - right across the street where there is a Morgan stable and they have an indoor arena. She did beautifully. We have room for a 2nd horse and have been discussing it right from the beginning as we don't want our girl to be lonely, and there are several of us (my husband, son and neighbor - and me) that all want to learn and ride. I would love to talk with you more and see if this might be a good fit. I am new to the board and I'm not sure of the protocol for getting in touch beyond this venue. Do we exchange phone numbers here and/or e-mail addresses?

Tash - Would love to communicate with you a bit more about Shasta and what you are looking for, for her. My mare, Kiva, (CBER Neon) is currently at "camp" in training with Terri and Matney Cook of TLC Training. They are Ken McNabb certified folks. I love them, and Kiva is responding really well to their methods. I plan to leave her with them through January and possibly February. They are also in the process of moving from a barn in Mount Vernon to one in Arlington, which is much closer to me. All good for us. At any rate, I am still considering a pasture mate for Kiva and a 2nd horse for our family. Can you give me more history on Shasta? Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Here is my page with her info on it... tarkh.com/others.aspShe has basically spent the last 6 months giving weekend pony rides to my friends' kids and kids from church. I've got tons of pics of her giving pony rides... She is basically bombproof, is easy to work with, basically the easiest horse I have. She is a good second horse because you can throw anyone up on her and they do just fine. The potential problem is that I have not been able to figure out what is up with her RH. I honestly think that she is just smart and is faking it because she is fine and dandy when running around out at pasture. I will only be offering Shasta on a long-term/permanent care lease because I want to maintain ownership so that I can be absolutely sure that she does well for the rest of her life. One thing... this girl is already overweight and that is on pasture at winter. If she is going to be pastured through spring someone is gonna have to take some measures (dry lot, grazing muzzle, etc.) to make sure she doesn't founder.

Great site. Love the photos and bios. I would love to come and meet Shasta. I need to know more about her RH and any needs she has for that. As far as her being on a dry lot, I think that's exactly where we are headed for Kiva (CBER Neon); she has slimmed down the last 2 months at "camp" and we'll want to keep her that way. She was a bit too fat when she came over from the feedlot. She still has some thickness on her neck, but the vet and farrier both said no other signs of foundering. We have a large pasture, but won't be doing any turn out on it until after it gets hayed, and then probably some short turn outs (maybe an hour or two). Shasta's temperament sounds like what we are looking for in a 2nd horse, one that my 8 year old could ride. I am in Arlington. I don't know how to send a PM to exchange personal info, but I bet you do!

About her RH... I think that she probably had an injury some time in the past and learned that she is "supposed" to favor it when people mess with her. When she is out on pasture running, playing, bucking, kicking, etc she is fine and dandy. When she is doing pony rides she is fine and dandy. When you take her out for the vet or farrier and they start messing with her (or even staring at her) she starts to favor her RH.
She has had a flexion test and the more they messed with her the worse she got. She has had a nerve block and the further they went the worse she got - which isn't possible if it was physical. She has had xrays and shows nothing that could cause any favoring.
Would you like to come meet her next weekend? I can send you the address.

I would love to come and meet her! And you, of course. Were you thinking Jan. 5/6 or 12/13? Either will work for me.

Oh don't tempt me like that! I'm going to have to decline (this time) for the auction. Possibly another time, though I'll probably need to bring a box of tissue! I would love to come this weekend, but actually next Sunday would work better for me and it sounds like you'd have less of a time constraint also. So, how about a date on Sunday, Jan. 13? You can e-mail me with your contact info. at sherylb6@yahoo.com.
