Baron was on the lot in August of 2006, and had a sad year... until he came to us in CA this last Memorial Day. He was misunderstood, and shucked thru three homes, and back to the first again having lost 100 lb...
Sadly, he was not ridden much, and then it was by a cowboy (the real rodeo kind...) for a few weeks.
Since I had originally adopted him, then did a switch with Aimee Wheeler for him (Aimee fell in love, and he turned out to be quite athletic and quick, not my slowpoke dream).... and I got Mr Bob Marley - seemed like a win-win at the time... but in the end, since I had promised him a good home and soft landing, I bought him back from Aimee when she was going to take him back to the auction this spring... and he came down South to Northern CA.
Baron is a total love of a beautiful dark bay horse, with a wide blaze, and one blue eye. He is just about 15 hands, and medium build, with good conformation. No faults I see.
He is about 9 years old. Health is perfect except he is allergic to flies and got hives this summer darn it....
The problem Baron had when we got him, which made him shift homes I think is that he is/was pushy on the ground, and didn't really know what was expected of him. He strikes me as a horse who was saddled up and rode. They forgot to do groundwork and give him the rules of the road... what things 'mean'. and add to that, he is SMART!!! thinking all the time... ready to work.... but needed to know 'what to do'!
So, I spent the summer letting him settle in, and learn some basics of his place in life.... then October 1, he went to Charles Wilhelm for training. Yes, THE Charles Wilhelm.!!!
He is doing SO well!!! They LOVE him!!! Charles has said three times to me now that he would make a great Ranch Versatility Horse... he is catty and quick, thinking, and ready to work. He describes him as very smart, and has not once had him act 'naughty'. He has never offered to rear or buck. His biggies have been 'crowding' in the crossties... and learning patience while tied. He wants to paw when tied... but that is mostly gone now.... he just hates to be bored!!!
So, he has only had one month with Charles, and they have him ranked as 70% to 80% at consistency with doing their required maneuvers on the ground and in the saddle... and the only thing he hasn't gotten to do is go on a trail ride. He has ridden around the ranch, on the roads, and in the outdoor arena... he roundpens, lunges, rides indoors and out, does cavaletti, tarps, you name it. So far, he is going great. and I have decided to bite the bullet and leave him a second month... Charles says he is really clicking this week, and he could really do well with one or two more months of consistent work.
This boy needs a JOB. He needs someone who wants to show, and ride him day in and day out. He is not a sissy horse, and certainly not going to be one you ride once a month.... but someone who wants a really sharp looking, quick and catty ranch versatility horse! he thinks he might do well at reining, he has a big stop, and spins great... (but he said he isn't 'cute' enough... whatever tHAT means!! LOL!!!)
I am taking Charles' advice, and putting up fliers and ads for him this week. Charles is so impressed with him that he is making a video of him for me this week too... with him riding him to show off what he can do. He is having his aprentices' ride him too, so he knows he will 'work' for anyone, who knows the cues.
(not just learning what to do for Charles, but actually learning the cues! what a concept!) I am putting him out there as a Ranch Versatility prospect, and pricing him to reflect 2 months of full training in such with Charles Wilhelm, $3500.
I will be negotiable to a RO board member/perfect home.
If you are local, the training he is in can continue on your dime with Charles, and with his training, you get two lessons a week from the master... Charles himself... and ON your horse (after you learn the basics on their horse)
I will defer to the new owner if he is purchased during this month, and allow them to take the lessons so Charles can teach you how to keep him up....
Of course, a third month with Charles will put polish on him for showing next season, and we can discuss that if you are interested....
Thanks, please pass the word, and I'll get you some video clips soon, but here is a picture of Baron and I at Charles' for the drop off 4 weeks ago, Baron is WAY more muscled up now! 5 days a week will do that to ya!
