The name for the big boy, is Bob... Big old Boy... Bob is a 3 year old 3/4 Suffolk Punch, 1/4 Morgan. He is about 16.2 hh, and about that wide... really, he is a nicely built riding horse, with huge feet! Bob has had 4 months of half time training now, and is quite solid at the basics.... he is slow as you go, like drafties... and not a lot of spook (so much energy in spooking, wouldn't you say?) He will make one heck of a trail riding horse, he's been raised since he was 6 mo old on our hills and trees and rocks of pature... and with a QH colt, so he doesn't know he is a draft... :-) He is super gentle, no 'ticklish' areas, does farrier great (they will love that!), barefoot of course... not so happy about fly spray, that is the only 'bad' thing I can think of... oh, one more 'bad'.... he allows his QH friend to EAT his TAIL!!! darn it, the QH ate everyone's tails as a baby, and 2 mo ago I put them at a friends for training, and the QH got worried, and ate Bob's beautiful, thick, curly, floor-length tail OFF... so, he looks like he is bobbed now, but he's not. He is just tail free... for winter thank goodness!!! no flies to swat!!! This boy has hair on his neck and tail (full mane on both sides, and thick tail) but no real feather... good for trails... easier on grooming. Special consideration to RO home.... here he is this summer, the first month of training (John Lyons trained trainer... so lots of groundwork done) and here is he last week, just hanging with us in the paddock... he kept following me with the camera... couldn't get him to stand still for a good pic!!! (I know, feet are horrible long, farrier comes this week...)

what IS suffolk punch??? my brother said he saw a HUGE (like over 19h) horse with a really long, wavy mane and tail with a strange breed name. He said the name started with an s, was kinda long, and he read that it was a breed recently developed... is this what he was talking about? or am I just outdated and crazy?

Hmmmm, not Suffolk, they are generally smaller drafts, in the 17 hh range, and they are compact as they are from the hilly regions and were a very old breed for plowing fields on hillsides. they do have wavy manes tho... and great personalities! wanna come see him? He is off Marsh Creek Road at Rancho El Pinto now!

Hey Beth - how do you think he would do in the Mounted Police? I have a cop friend that is looking for a draft cross to take thru the mounted police training course........he lives in a relatively small town (population 10,000) so it isn't like he would be chasing down bad guys in NYC!!!!
Let me know what you think, and how much you are asking for him............
Thanks!

I think Bob would be a great Mounted Police Horse! He is young, how old do they have to be? He will be 4 in the spring. He is a typical Draft, not a whole lot worries him, sometimes a 'little thing' gets him to lookie loo... but he seems oblivious to the 'big stuff'... tarps, flapping stuff... ho hum
He has been in half training for 4 months now, and is doing very well. He is with a John Lyons type trainer, lots of ground work, lots of sacking out and despooking stuff... I personally think that really pays off in the long run to do it right at the beginning...
I'm asking $3000 for him now, I had to go up to meet my cost on training... but I can be negotiable to a great home ( of course).

Beth, contact SF Police Department. I ran into one of their horse buyers recently and they were looking for horses just like this guy ---- big draft type crosses with great feet. They were looking at 4 year olds, so they are fine with youngsters. They were looking at horses to buy, too.
I don't have the contact info, but contact SFPD and ask them to put you in touch with whomever is in charge of mounted patrol.

Oh my Bob is doing so well... here is a pic from the trainer's phone today... doesn't he move well??? not bad for a big drafty boy!!! mta that that top picture is of the trainer doing the fingers on the poll = head down cue... a good thing for a big boy to know! LOL! just as an example of what he is learning.. :-) he is now learning roundpenning! and 'trail' riding, well, ranch riding... on the dirt tracks around the ranch he's on. he's doing so well!!! and getting to see lots of people, tractors (the feed tractor has a blue tarp over the top like a roof... now there is a good way to desensitize!) they have goats, lots of dogs... you name it!

Thanks! The trainer got pics this weekend of her on him riding... so will post those soon! (as soon as I get them!) I really really want this boy to find an awesome home, I wonder if he is right for the fox hunting groups? I am not sure how large they like them... or how heavy... anyone know? there is a largish fox hunting group up north of me, Katie knows them, and I might post him there... I'm an awful salesperson!

Beth, is Bob still up for re-homing?

|
|
Post by pnp4kidz on Feb 9, 2008 2:54:00 GMT -5
Yes, he had one near miss on an adopter, but she had a failure of rehoming her spare horse, so needs to wait for him to go first. Bob is still in half training, getting better every month! Trail riding time! anyone looking?

Bob was a PMU foal, we adopted 4 mares and 2 foals during a final dispersal sa Zle when this farm lost their contract... very nice horses, who were well cared for. we adopted this horses mare too, and she had another foal in spring. He is a great horse, and if I could, I'd keep him... no issues, just a great riding horse... green, and ready to go any direction

Bob is doing SO well folks! If you know of anyone looking for a draft cross riding horse... he might be your boy! he is still green, but we've been showing him to prospective buyers, and he is taking it all in stride! just think, here is a green horse, and for the first time other riders are on him, and as it turns out the two who came to see him and rode him were all greenies themselves!!! one of the women put her hubby up on him, then pronounced it was so cool cause hubby had only been ON a horse two or three times!!! ACK!!! no helmet, tennies... and she then yells... "kick him!!! make him trot!!!", so he does ( NOT a smart man)... and when Bob Trots, (now, think nearly 16.3 h and 2300 lb trotting... it's BIG) hubby FREAKS, heels come up and deep into Bob's sides... hard... and hubby of course stops riding and grabs the horn... Bob did one little skitter like he was going to shy at something as we all realized what hubby did... Bob then tried trotting a little faster... he'd never had someone do THAT to him... but he TRIED so hard to figure out what this big guy was asking !!! I hollered "say WHOA" and luckily he did, and good Bob, he stopped... :-) I was a proud mom for sure... and we got hubby down... and praised Bob over and over... Bob showed me that he was going to be really easy going... that must have been scary to have that happen!!!
next rider couldn't balance on him... at the walk. she wanted to buy him... ahem... 'I'll call ya'... not. still lookin' for the right pardner for Bob!!! But I'm likin' him more and more!!! take him before I keep him!!! LOL!!!
Oh, and for you Oregonians... I'm headed for Bend next weekend... transport 'can be arranged'... :-)

Hey Beth, Bob is my kind of horse! However, I already have five, but if I was looking for another, I would take him in a heartbeat!
I lost my PMU mare almost a year ago to colic............the drafts are my weakness........

Beth, as much as I would love to have him, I can't afford him, nor do I think my panels can handle another draft horse! They seem to be very hard on my lightweight panels!!!!!!!
Who are you picking up? Where are you meeting? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!!

Hey Beth, maybe we could get you a head cam to wear, then we can see everything for your perspective! Even the dirt if you get tossed! But you won't get tossed again.............think positive! Have you been back on him since you came off?
Hope we get to see you on Sunday! Oh, and I think Bob would really like it in Bend!!!!!

Hey, RR, some of them just really catch your eye and your heart. Shimmer was an awesome boy. Besides, swapping horses is better than swapping other things. Like colds or the flu or something.
