Kiona, 8 yr old, 16 hands paint gelding, possibly TB cross?
UPDATE 12/19/07: We rode Kiona today and he was great - probably would be good for an intermediate rider. When asked to back, he didn't know what was being asked of him, but he tried really hard to do what he thought you wanted him to do. Not one mean bone in his body. He was pretty smooth at a walk, the rider did not feel any limp from his right front or with the hind foot's wound. We were in a small pen so didn't do much trotting, but he did trot for a short distance and was fine. I think he'd be a great trail horse, but would advise having a vet look at him to ensure that he'd be ok for trail riding and his leg wouldn't be an issue, though I feel it won't. He accepted the saddle and bridle with no problems, however, could use some more work with lowering his head more, since he's so tall, it's hard to bridle or halter him, so I've been working with him by pushing down on his poll and he responds by dropping his head. He was wormed today as well and didn't fuss about that.
Kiona was donated to CBER, he was most likely feedlot bound if we had not accepted him from the actual owners. We were told their kids rode him around the pasture bareback and is gentle on the ground.
He is easy to catch and easy to handle on the ground. He had his feet trimmed on 12/11/07 and was great for the farrier. He is toed in on the front, especially on his right leg, though it does not slow him down at all! He looks very smooth at a trot. He does have an old wound on his right hind heel which is being treated but it does not seem to bother him at all. I am hoping the weather will cooperate and we can try to ride him to see what he knows under saddle. He did accept a saddle with no problems and was not cinchy at all. A very nice horse!
Adoption fee is to help cover costs for Kiona and other horses, if possible.
MTA: Wendy DeGraaf is PS for Kiona. She can be reached via the email link on the CBER website. Go to columbiabasinequinerescue.org/DEF-HorsesProfile.asp?HoID=1043 and click on Wendy DeGraaf.
