This is an INCREDIBLY sweet mare who, we found out today, is broke to ride! Actually, more than broke to ride... push button! I am leaving for Colorado tomorrow morning so will no longer be listed on this horse.

Sam says our girl is healthy, happy, and ready to come home! The vet gave her a clean bill of health, and Sam's farrier worked over her feet, which she says were horrible, poor thing. I can't wait to get this girl home, and hubby is more excited than I am! Soon Sierra girl, very soon.

SHE"S HOME!! Jeez what a trip. 10 hours, stopping every 2 to check and water. She did well, but was VERY happy to get into the pasture. Even with Sam's great care she still has a ways to go as far as putting on some pounds. Her backbone and ribs still show, and she is having a bit of trouble negotiating her feet from time to time since the farrier got her feet back in shape 3 days ago. But she is old fashioned Appy, right down to her deep chest, rangy build, sparse mane, and floating shuffle trot (YEE HAW, she is a SHUFFLER!). Can't wait for her to get a few more pounds on so I can climb aboard. Right now it wouldn't be fair to sit on her poky spine. She is having her teeth floated next week, too, so I am sure she thinks she is major picked on. My Mustangs and she just greeted each other over the fence, and have been very polite. Sweetie, who has been a pain in the butt to Pal, has already quit pacing the fenceline. Guess she just wanted female company. Well, after 4 AM here, and after that trip, I am half dead, so I am hitting my pillow. I will update photos as soon as I am alive again....

OMG, this mare is one of the most beautiful movers I have ever seen!! Tonight she and Mustangs decided to play tag. Head up and tail straight in the air, she was floating over the ground with the most beautiful suspended gait I have ever seen. Amazing. How in the heck does a mare like this end up being sent to a feed lot?

She is so sweet, just like sugar. Tomorrow is the vet trip to do a more complete assessment of her and have her teeth done. She banged her back right leg somehow in the trailer, still trying to figure out on what. More of a scrape than anything, but I am watching it like a hawk. She is sucking down hay like she has a $1400 Kirby vaccum for mouth, and spends a lot of time at the mineral block.

Okay, well, good and not so good news from the vet today. The good news is that Sierra is healthy, and was a very good girl. She let the vet file her teeth without any fuss or sedatives, and got her shots like pro. She has a bit of soft scar tissue high on her left flank, but it doesn't seem to bother her in any way. Could stand to have about 75 pounds on her, which is less than I though she needed, but I am used to short, stocky Mustangs, so what do I know? She is so well mannered that when the vet finished and opened the chute, as bad as she wanted out, she instead stood still because my horse-stupid husband was standing in front of her. As soon as he moved, she came right out. Our other mare would have run him down, lol. The bad news is that we will have less time with her than we thought, as she is 17, not 11. No wonder she is "push button" broke.

I am going to be climbing on little miss this evening, so stay posted for photos. We haven't bought a headstall yet, so I will be trying her in a side pull with my Aussie saddle. Brian just goes out and hugs and pets her, he is so excited to have a horse that wants to be with him. Our Sweetie (badly misnamed by her former owner) is very aloof and pushy on the ground, and is not trained to ride anyway. Paladin only likes Mom and is too much horse for him, so, this girl is now his.

Sierra is beautiful! 17 is considered "senior" but just barely and I hope you enjoy many years with her. My favorite horse, also an old time appaloosa, was euthanized at 32 and this was before all the senior feed and extensive dental care was available. You might want to get the "Hands-On Senior Horse Care Book" for some extra tips.

Poor little girl has a stiff neck tonight, after that long trailer ride, teeth float, and her shots. Vet told me to give her some anti-inflamatory stuff she recommended, and let her rest a few more days before climbing aboard. Guess I am just anxious to ride her, but of course, Sierra's health comes first.

Gave her the meds in grain mixed with Karo syrup and carrots (use the same trick with wormer), the other 2 got jealous, whoops; gotta remember to bring enough for everyone! She is better this morning reaching down, but still doesn't have good side to side neck movement. I gave her a neck massage, and she liked that just fine. Pal didn't, though. He pinned his ears and squealed at her, stomped his feet; Mom is spending way to much time with this stranger to suit him. It was nice to know that he feels attached, though, because there were times when I wondered if that would ever happen. Sierra really likes my husband, though, and will leave me to go see him, which tickles him, because the other 2 will leave him for me.

Most photos show her grazing, but she has weight to put on, so what else would she be doing? community.webshots.com/user/idaarchae. She is such a lovely, well mannered lady. I hope our other two clowns don't teach her bad habits, especially Not-So-Sweetie, the knot-headed Mustang mare!

To see Sierra's new photos, check link in above post. Her neck is doing much better. I guess the foot trim, 10 hour ride, and teeth float was a bit much to take on in one week. I know I wasn't exactly moving at the speed of light for a few days myself after that trip, and nobody re-aligned my feet....Sierra has no mane to speak of, typical old style Appy, but she does have a lovely full fly swisher! She was a very good girl while I brushed her down and combed out her tail. Her tail was in dread locks underneath, and some caked on feedlot crud, so we broke out the Cowboy Magic and it all just fell right out. I don't know who invented that stuff, but I am ready to buy stock in the market shares.

Poor girl has a bad chip out of her hoof this morning, the edge of the sole is exposed. I have posted for suggestions on the Health thread, since my vet isn't available til next week. I will get photos of it up sometime this evening. She is so cute, and her nicker is to die for. My husband thinks it is the sweetest thing he has ever heard. She will follow you everywhere if you let her, and comes running as soon as she spots you. She will also tattle on the others if they run her off her hay or chase her out of the run in. She comes to the gate and calls to you until you come out and fix the situation (or the Mustang's wagon, whichever is requried).

Well, she isn't lame on the foot, but does favor it a little more than the others. I posted some photos of it and the front right hoof as well, the one with the old scar across the coronet (seems to be affecting the way the hoof grows a little, you can see a ridge all the way from the scar to the bottom of the hoof). She is so cute, just gets right into your pocket the minute you are within reach. Likes to have her head rubbed, and will use you for a scratching post if the opportunity presents itself. Very nice lady, who just lets you put on medications and fly masks, and leads like a dream, even without a halter. I can't wait to get on her, but I am now concerned about waiting for her hoof to grow out some first. She is putting on weight real well, and we have started her on a good on-feed suppliment that includes biotin to help her get her hooves back in shape. We also giving her some corn oil on her feed, and keeping an extra mineral block out, which she is going to town on as well. Her coat is starting to shine, and she is becoming more and more talkative and chummy. What a darling, my Hubby is in love!!! My boy, Pal, gets jealous, though. Hoo-boy, Momma has to watch how she doles out the attention.
