Sometimes I worry about what I run across on this board! So - back to Gypsy - woohoo! Dazzler is smiling about how he worked this one out.

We are still trying to get this girl moved. Since we both work days, and there is no daylight right now in the evenings, we haven't been able to coordinate this thing. Neither our place or theirs has much in the way of outside lighting, and she is a wild hare, so it's not like we can just put on a halter and load her up. We are going to need patience, horsie treats or grain, and lots of time. She is also in with 6 other horses, which doesn't help. Last time we went over it took 2 hours to separate her, and then she pushed down the gate to get back to the others. The owner is getting impatient, but isn't offering much in the way of a solution, either. I am hoping he doesn't change his mind, we haven't signed papers on her yet.

What about some light sedation to take the edge off? Otherwise it could be a bit dangerous getting her in a trailer without a professional chute!

They do have a chute. But, my preferred method is to put food in the trailer and wait for the horse to load itself, then quietly close the door. Our trailer is a 20 open stock trailer, so not terribly claustrophobic. This is how they loaded her last year when they got her. They said once she was in she was calm and traveled just fine. We only have to get her 3.5 miles....if the little beggar was broke I'd ride her home.

I don't use it for ANYTHING else.. but I do have to say, Omeline is one good motivator. Give her a bowl of that a few times... and then put some in the trailer.... Good luck... it can be hard.... if they have any fear of going 'inside'.

If you can get her seperated and by herself - don't feed her the night before - just water(REALLY - I am not cruel!!!) Then, the next morning when she is good and hungry, put some alfalfa in the front of the trailer and open it up - leave a little trail up to the front. Hunger is one powerful motivator. If you have access to 6 foot corral pannels maybe you could set up a tall corral and run her in. If you were closer I would come help Take care, Sara

Well, we are going to take some hay over for her tomorrow, he got her separated. I have decided to spend a few days working with her at their place before moving her over. I found out today that I am the only person who came out to see her that she took treats from. I had no idea that was even an issue, so it seems that she may have picked me, instead of the other way around. I will take more photos, she has a beautiful symetrical blaze and a cute face. Her winter coat is a lot like Paladin's, thick and fluffy. I want to see if she will allow me to halter her.

She's okay to feed and touch for the most part, but is a bit leery of that halter thingy. Doesn't know what picking up feet is, so that is going to be fun. She has some ridges in her hooves, looks to be related to inconsistent nutrition. Since these folks pulled her and her sorrell friend in from a very large herd that isn't too suprising. She seems curious, which is good, and would check my pockets once she figured out that's where the treats were coming from. That was a great motivator with Paladin. I had a serious apple and carrot bill for a while when I first started making friends with him. Stupid battery didn't take a charge on my old Mavica, and I didn't know it til I got over there. I will take the other camera tomorrow. We did drop off some hay for her, since it looks like she will be there a few more days, and we didn't want to deplete their horse's food supply. Brian doesn't know what to make of her. He is still in mourning and doesn't really want to try yet. I am mourning too, but this girl needs us right now. If it turns out she isn't a good fit, we will find her a good fit, just like we did our pretty Sweetie girl. That is what rescue's do. We do it for our rescued Malamutes all the time.

I'm sure its hard to see this horse and feel anything other than just compassion for her...but I bet she will win you over as time passes...I was very aggravated with with my mini kicking wench for the first YEAR, but she's wormed her way into my heart...and somehow for me, the naughty ones end up being the most rewarding...

Yes, Paladin in my naughty one. I loved him completely from the instant I saw him. He is a wild willed nightmare, but we are truly bonded. I hope that Brian and sassy miss Gypsy grow similarly attached.

Gypsy girl is shedding out, and we officially have a Tobiano! She really is pretty. I tried to get photos today, but the camera battery died. I have it in the charger right now, so sometime tomorrow, I will be posting new photos. She is good about petting, taking treats, and being brushed, but still doesn't like the halter thing. Forget about the feet, we aren't there yet, and she needs trimmed, so we may have the vet sedate her to give her annual round of vaccines and have our trimmer come out at the same time.

Oh, she's got a great eye. She reminds me of my girl. Gotta love the Tobiano coloring. Have you thought about clicker training with her? It's a great way to open up a conversation with a horse (if they are not too freaked by the sound of the clipper!)

Yeah, we figured not bad for a freebe....our neighbors all think she is pretty cute as well. BIG trot, she would do well in a dressage ring. Really nice mover. TALL, she makes our kids look like Shetlands. I'll bet she is near 16 hands.

Gypsy is very sweet, she follows you around the pasture like a dog, and loves to be petted. She is still jumpy around things made of ropes, and when something new blows across the pasture, but she is doing pretty well, over all. Hope to get her picking up her feet by June 1, that is when the trimmer will be out. He didn't want to do a sedated horse unless he absolutely had to, and asked me to work with her some more. Modified to add, I am scared of this horse, but not because of the way she behaves. She is just way too tall for my tastes. I will not be riding this girl, I don't like being on tall horses. I am going to get her measured, but she dwarfs my other 2; I am betting very close to 16 hands. Just as a point of reference, that post behind her is 7 foot tall. I hug the fence line when I am out in the pasture with her, because if she bolted and hit me, I wouldn't bounce off her, I would just go down and be trampled. She has feet like dinner plates, and I would be crushed like a soda can.

Our Wild Gypsy is going to the trainer today, to learn about halter and ropes, and how to act nicely when you wear them. Then we will begin playing feet games. Luckily, this is one very food motivated horse!

Oh boy, the trainer got a catch rope on her yesterday, and it was a rodeo! Wow. She is doing much better today, but you would have thought cordage in all of its forms was a whole new invention....

Still at the trainer, but we have had a halter on her several times now. I worked her some under Chris' direction, and got her to lead a bit. She is coming along, but quite set in her ways, the pill. She is going to take daily work. If anyone has ideas about teaching a 5 year old mare to have her feet handled, please talk to me, because that is next....those feet gotta be trimmed soon!

She is back home as of last night, with admonitions from Chris to work her daily. We will see how she does today. She sure can be stubborn. She has never been asked to do anything before in her life, so she doesn't know what to make of all this. You can touch her all over with a Parelli stick, and she isn't head shy, so all that is good. But those feet. She just won't let you go near her feet.
