Two days after we lost Dazzler, I got a call from a good friend. Her next-door neighbor had been out to see a couple of horses that were being given away. The horses' family could not afford to feed them through the winter due to an auto accident that the whole family had been in and the cost of hay this year. Their only other option was auction, but they were afraid that due to being untrained and stocky, the only interest would be from meat buyers. They live only 3 miles down the road from us. My friend's neighbor is taking one mare, but potential home after potential home decided to pass on the other, a coming 6 year-old QH/draft cross. The family was getting desperate. We had already put in hay for 3, so....she is coming to live with us tomorrow. Not at all sure what we have done to ourselves this time, but we are calling her Gypsy because she stole her way into our lives.

She is beautiful. A new begining, not to take the place of Dazzler, but maybe sent to help you and Brian heal a little faster. The Davenport auction save that Sarah has helped her to heal too. I guess the two of you were supposed to have these horses. Kathy

How wonderful for so many. A gift to her - a safe and loving home. A gift to her family - knowing she is safe when they could no longer care for her. A gift for you and your family - a horse who needs you. Perhaps since Dazz couldn't stay, she is his Christmas gift to you.
Much blessing to you all for being willing to open you hearts and your home to her.

I am sure Dazzler approves! So many people helped in this situation, and the family (and horse) avoid the auction ring!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story; I love the title of the thread and couldn't agree more. Will Dazzler's plaid blankie fit her?
Merry Christmas to you, your husband, and Gypsy ~ and Merry Christmas to you, Dazzler! We know you're watching!

Well, we did it to ourselves this time, Lord have mercy, this one is practically wild! These folks got her as a 4 year-old from some idiots who had a herd of about 70-80 animals just running loose on a big acreage. They spent the last year getting her to accept touch and petting, but haven't even haltered her yet!! They do say she is gentle with people on the ground, but geez....I have decided I am a masochist. Guess the new barefoot trimmer isn't going to be doing her tomorrow like we thought. I have to get her haltered, broke to lead, and picking up her feet before he comes back in 6 weeks. Somebody just shoot me, lol!

Look at the bright side of this MustangAppy! Nobody has ruined her. She's a clean slate without a bunch of baggage. And, as you know, you've got a wealth of information by way of people on this board, so if you run into any problems, we can help! ;D I, too, love the name of this thread because it is SO true!

All I know is that one Mustang should have been enough! This one will be going to a professional after her ground work is done. I don't have time to put the original miles on her.

I got offered a coming two year old Clydesdale that was not halter broke. She had to be moved from their property within 30 days-as they were moving. My trainer went up and worked with her and by the end of the second week had her loaded in a trailer and back to our property. The same day her front feet were trimmed (never had seen a Farrier) and the following day her backs. The right trainer is worth everything. Don't lose faith- this horse was meant to be with you.

Too right Kerrie.. This girl is old enough to be ridden, and should have not only the physical maturity but the mental maturity as well to handle training. I think some of the "green" shinanigans we expect when starting a horse is not as much the "green" part as the young part. If she accepts people then working towards haltering shouldn't be a huge thing. Look at Barbs girl, she is ancient for what some folks would consider the time to start a horse and look how GREAT she is doing! She took to training very well and was able to demonstrate what she liked to do (rope, trail) and not (barrels). She will very quickly became a solid trail horse. While she came from a bad situation (slick gardner ranch) atleast they neglected them.. so no issues a little bit of food didnt fix. ;D P.S. My girl is 7 and we didnt even start saddling until she was 6, things got delayed waiting for her next clinic but when she was ready for her first ride it was really calm and without drama. (If Angi wasn't broken I would be ridding her too, but we are waiting for her button and wire to come out, and until more then 2 fingers work on her hand)

Tolo didnt really want anything to do with people at first.... but once they see that YOU are the one feeding them and eventually brushing them and stuff, they tend to bond quickly, DONT lose hope now!!

Not losing hope, just know that I am still working with Pal and have limited time...sigh. Wish I didn't have a job 10 miles away from home. Would make things like training easier. I do have access to my friend Chris, who worked Pal through his tacking issues recently. She might be willing to start this girl once I get her handleable. Gypsy has great movement, which surprised me, because she really doesn't look all that correct at first glance. She is very sure about her footing, and is one of those that runs with her head up instead of stretched out, and has very flashy leg action.
